Would it be more risky to let her have the pups or to take a chance at getting her spa?

My moms 6yr old chihuahua gave birth to 2 puppies 5 months ago. One of the pups was still born and the other one was born alive but had to be euthanized because it was born without the top part of its head. The vet suggested that they have the chihuahua spayed but they hadnt gotten it done yet. A week ago she mated again and my mom is concerned because we were told that its not safe for female dogs to have two litters of pups back to back. Also we were told that it could be risky to have her spayed while she is in heat. Mom asked about getting the shot to abort the pups but the vet said that its not safe to do that with a small dog. So what i need to know is would it be more risky to let her have the pups or to take a chance at getting her spayed?

You should really atlk to her vet about this, as he/she knows her overall health.
. My vet says it is safe to spay within the first 3 weeks after being bred..but the sooner AFTER her heat, the better. ( as soon as the vulva is not swollen).

Get her spayed right now. The pups will be aborted, but chances are they would not be healthy anyway. In the future, your mom should have all of her animals spayed or neutered when they’re puppies to prevent such tragedy from happening in the first place.

As long as you trust your vet, I would do what they recommended.

Spay her… six years old is okay for surgery but getting up there in the years in terms of pregnancy.

Wow a boneheaded move 3 times in a row. Not getting her spayed when you first got her, not getting her spayed when she first got pregnant, and not spaying her after she got pregnant. Stop the bonehead cycle, get her spayed as soon as possible. Sorry I called you a bonehead, but it is boneheaded even you must admit.

Since there is the possibility of her being pregnant now, I do NOT suggest getting her spayed.

Wait until you know for sure or not if she is either pregnant or not pregnant. If she’s pregnant, let her through the pregnancy and once the pups are born, spay her as soon as possible. Keep her away from ALL other male dogs during this time. Have your mother keep a close eye on her.

If she’s not pregnant, wait until you get the O.K. from your vet to get her spayed. Your vet knows what he’s doing. :)

Good luck, and I wish the best for you and the dog!

Your vet can tell you whether it’s safe for her to be spayed. If he says there is still a risk you’re going to have a decision to make but I would take the risk. If your dog has more puppies then those might die and even if they don’t you’re just adding to the overpopulation of homeless dogs.

What RISK what CHANCE is there in getting her spayed?

What type of good owner allows a dog that produces deformed and stillborn puts to breed?

Get the puppies aborted and getting the dog fixed. You’ll save yourself time and money, and your chi a lot of pain by getting her fixed.

If she was fixed in the first place you wouldn’t be dealing with this right now, would you? Learn a lesson in this.

Get her spayed after the pups are born and stop more dogs in animal shelterd from dying.

Back to back litters are not great – but as the b*tch didn’t actually rear either pup, she won’t be as worn out by it as a dog that had reared nine or ten and then conceived again on her next heat. Much more important is how fit she was before she fell pregnant this time – if she is in good condition then it’s not such a concern.

The concerns are though, that she will have more badly formed pups – and you don’t say if it was another chihuahua she mated with? If it was anything bigger, I would certainly have her spayed during early pregnancy, and in fact, as she failed to produce healthy pups last time, I’d be tempted to go ahead and spay her now in any case – much kinder on her.

  11. threedogmomma says:

The shot that they can give to abort the puppies is not safe for any size dog. I think a lot of vets refuse to do it now – I know that mine won’t.

We had our Border Collie/Australian Shepherd cross spayed when she was pregnant and there were no problems (she got pregnant before we adopted her). She recovered very quickly and became a much more manageable dog once she was only eating for herself.

  12. cav mom says:

if she is preg. than you can have her spayed. there is more chance of bleeding if you spay during heat cycle but there is a bigger chance of loosing her having pups. i would go ahead and have her spayed. discus your concerns with the vet. and go from there. good luck

  13. harleycollies says:

Have her spay. I had one spayed while she was in season a lot of vets will do that. You should never breed a dog after it is 5 years old. It is to hard on the female and you take a chance of loosing mom and pups.

It is safe enough to get a dog spayed when she is in heat – just more work and a bit more money.

It is NOT safe to let her have the pups again so soon, especially since she had such a bad time last time around.

Please get the poor thing spayed now – before the pups develop, she may not make it giving birth again this soon, she is too old to be breeding in any case – very dangerous for her.
