How To Extend The Life Of Swimming Pool Filter Cartridges

By Shamoil Karachiwala

Although the low cost of filter cartridges allow for regular replacement, there are a few simple things you can do to extend the life of your swimming pool filter cartridges and at the same time ensure that your swimming pool stays as clean and crystal clear as possible.

Through the cycle of daily use a filter cartridge begins to collect debris. This is after all what the filter is supposed to do. Everything that is captured by your filter is debris that would otherwise be sharing the pool with you and your loved ones.

As debris begins to collect on the cartridge it becomes more difficult to move water through the filter system. As a result, it puts additional stress on your pump and decreases the amount of water that moves through the filtration system.

The performance of your pool filter cartridge can be improved greatly while at the same time extending the life in three simple steps.

Step 1: Rinse the Loose Debris

The first step is to gently rinse any debris off the cartridge. It

its fine but keep an eye on it. usually the pressure will make it worse eventually.

Should I be concerned about my swimming pool filter?
So my above ground swimming pool filter has a very small amount of water that leaks when the pump is running. It is at the seam at top portion of filter near the pressure gauge. Sorry not sure what it is called. It is an old jacuzzi model I think from 2001. It is only leaking a tiny amount of water, not enough to puddle just see the lines on my filter. Should I be concerned? My pump is staying primed and everything seems to be working fine. The Pressure is staying at 11psi.

how to install a swimming pool filter?

Bottom of the skimmers goes to the front of the pump. Top of the pump goes to filter “inlet”. Filter “outlet” goes to the pool return fitting.

Proper way to ground a swimming pool filter?
I have it plugged into a gfci and a ground wire from the filter motor into the ground.

As we all know electricity and water together can create life safety concerns. Don’t take short cuts with this grounding your pool pump. Check with your local codes department for grounding in your area.

They usually require you to drive a 1/2 or 5/8 copper rod 10′ into the ground and connect your pump with a specific gauged ground wire and connectors.

The hardest part is driving the ground rod into the ground. A post driver will make this effort easier then using a slag hammer.

Ground rods are 10′ for a reason. So don’t think about cutting it off because your having a difficult time driving it in all the way. Remember, “Life Safety.”

This is also a good way to ground a concrete pool deck or rod iron fencing around your pool.

Can I locate my swimming pool filter 15 feet from pool?
I would like to relocate my above ground D.E. filter and pump about 15 feet from my pool. I would also be about 3 ft lower in elevation than if it was sitting next to the pool. Can I do this without losing any performance? I would run the pipes under ground.

how often do you need to replace you swimming pool cartridge filter?
We live in PA and we have been told 2 swimming seasons but my dad insists that the filter we have is fine and sprays it with a hose everyday. so how do you know when it is time to change it? oh our pool is the 30 ft round and it is a hayward filter.

  9. sr71black says:

well..you should’nt have to clean it everyday-sounds like its too small…a filter can be acid washed to remove oils its still good as long as the material is not frayed…some last 4-5 years for the larger sizes: http://www.swimming-pool-information.com/cartridge-swimming-pool-filters.html

Distance you asked about is fine.
With the lower elevation, it will try to
drain down to pools water level each time you take the lid off the pump & / or filter.
You can plumb an airlock loop,
with your SCH 40 PVC pipes,
    above the water level.
