Getting A Hot Tub Installed In Your Home

Author: Mark Walters

After a hard day at work, there is nothing better than heading home and relaxing. Letting your muscles and mind unwind is how you recharge your batteries, so to speak, so that you are ready to take on another day. One of the most ideal places to re-energize yourself is in a warm, calming hot tub. The heat takes you away and allows you to forget the stresses that pile up; but before you buy a hot tub, there are some items to consider before taking the plunge.

Homes are not often built with hot tub considerations, so it will be necessary to research how many and how extensive alterations will need to be to the existing house. Portable hot tubs usually don't require any additional plumbing or electrical work. They also require no digging because they are designed to move from place to place. Just a few people can lift a portable hot tub and move it indoors or outdoors depending on one's wishes. In-ground hot tubs are meant to be more permanent, so they are often housed in the deck or surrounded by concrete. Plumbing and electricity will need to be extended to them, but the home's value will increase with the inclusion of an in-ground hot tub. That will be a bonus when it comes time to sell.

It is important to remember that hot tubs heat the water using electricity. The amount of funds you have to throw at the electric bill will be reduced if you insulate the hot tub. Insulation lessens the power required to initially heat the water and to keep it warm. Tubs that already have insulation installed are slightly more expensive than those that do not, but the long-term effect will be positive on your utility bill. Indoor hot tubs can get away with basic insulation because the house provides insulation. Tubs that spend time outside in the winter, however, will not adequately heat the water with basic insulation. These hot tubs will need full foam insulation, which is the most effective type. It is a lining between the shell and cabinet of the hot tub. Full foam is found in most hot tubs that are already insulated.

Because you will likely entertain guests from time to time, consider how many people you would like the hot tub to accommodate at once. A hot tub that is tiny will make people feel bottled up and too close together, a sure fire recipe for discomfort. The best way to figure out an adequate size is to go to a show room and take a seat in a hot tub on display. This should give you an idea of how many people it can comfortably fit and lead you to the proper hot tub to buy. A hot tub puts your mind and body at ease with its warm, comforting water. Purchase one that has a big enough capacity and maintains heat well, and you will enjoy it for hours on end. Buy one, take it home, and enjoy its relaxing properties.

Hi can’t tell you how often I have changed out the light transformer on a Sundance. Hopefully yours is not Digital (newer models) and is just a simple matter of replacing the light bulb from any auto store. MOST LIKELY…it’s digital and the transformer is dead.

BTW That is a GREAT TUB!

I’m almost positive my parents got theirs for 6500, and they said it was a good deal, so Yeah, I guess it is.

I have a sundance marin hot tub. The lights won’t come on. Is there a fuse or circuit breaker just for them?
I’ve tried both switch locations and neither works. They used to work but I haven’t used them in months so don’t know when this happened.

Sundance Spa Hot Tub Screen Won’t Turn On After faulty wiring of jet pump?
I went to replace a 240v 2-speed jet pump on a Sundance Hot Tub today. After hooking up the new pump, the Spa powered up fine, but when I tried to turn on the Jets (that the new pump was powering), the screen flickered off. After further inspection, I realized (the hard way) that I had mixed up one of the hots and the common/neutral wires. When this all happened, it blew the GFI circuit breaker in the garage as well, but even once power was restored the the Hot Tub, the screen still wont come on nor will the heater or circulation pump. I have tried leaving it disconnected for over 45 min to let it reset but still no luck. There is definitely power going to the circuit board as indicated by an orange light on the outside of the circuit board box. Did I fry the whole circuit board? Is there a reset button? or a fuse that a might have blown? What are my next steps to diagnose the problem and can I fix is without replacing the whole board?

    thank you,
    Ivan

I have had my share of fried circuit boards. Most times you can see the fried component. The board itself doesn’t often go bad. In my experience the capacitors are the hardest hit. BUT I also have found to my great luck there is an on board fuse. Look for this first.

here is what most likely happened.
Feeds to homes are 220. which are basically 110 that are out of phase making one 110 and the other -110 at their peak and then they flip. Thus we get 220. Standard outlets will pull from only one leg. 220 will pull from both.
Your circuit board was pulling from one leg and your motor was pulling from both. The leg from the motor you hooked to the wrong wire had to be the one out of faze with the current feeding the circuit board. Other wise it would not have touched the board. AS the voltage between them would have been equal and it would have just grounded. But circuit board being -110 out of phase would draw the current across the board more than the common at 0 volts would have. Thus you ran 220 across the board. The board took a good hit. GFCI saves people from dieing not circuits boards.

I am sure you have at least a few exploded caps and maybe burnt resistors and diodes.
Replacement mint not be too bad. But then again its a luxury item so…. humm.
