Enhance the Spa Experience

Author: Jane Shepherd

A new type of therapeutic flooring designed to aid vitality and support spa environments has been launched.

Barefoot - the home of Floor Couture - has developed Hot Rocks, a revolutionary seamless stone carpet finish that offers a unique, foot massaging effect.

Inspired by Feng Shui, Hot Rocks comprises of marble pebbles, brought to life in a clear resin finish.

It includes the option of underfloor heating, which can be installed beneath the surface, giving out warmth that is retained underfoot for hours.

Technically advanced, the floor also includes the natural purification element silver in the mix, which is able to tackle problems as challenging as MRSA.

The result is a seamless, slip resistant surface that brings the beauty and harmony - and the strength and durability - of nature underfoot, suitable for all areas of the spa, including the surrounds of indoor pools.

Barefoot has worked with chiropractor Dr Robert Oldham of Cheshire's Salveo Chiropractic to develop the concept for the flooring market.

Dr Robert Oldham, who is based in Cheshire, said: "If you try and stand on one leg you will realise and feel how many muscles in the foot, ankle, leg and low back contract to keep you standing straight. Barefoot flooring works on a similar principle, therefore, strengthening muscles in a non-stressful way.

"At Salveo Clinic of Chiropractic we have had Barefoot flooring installed in our consultation rooms to allow patients to experience the benefits from walking on this type of floor which stimulates their nervous system."

Andrea Hall, Barefoot's senior designer said: "Barefoot's bid to encourage people in the UK to 'lose the shoes' is all about instigating a healthy lifestyle approach.

"Hot Rocks has been inspired by the eastern art of Feng Shui to be healthy, harmonious and supporting life in a productive way - and has a great synergy with spa and leisure environments."

The floor also includes the element silver in the mix, noted for its natural purification qualities, to keep a hygienic, fresh finish - free of dust mites.

Barefoot is a new business venture, which creates a range of floors, all designed to encourage people to enjoy the feeling of freedom underfoot.

It is the brainchild of entrepreneur Dawn Gibbins MBE, a former Veuve Clicquot Business Woman of the Year.

Last year Dawn sold her Cheshire based global business Flowcrete - which she built up from a start-up in the 1980s to a major international company with offices in 30 countries.

Through Barefoot, Dawn is now able to combine her love of flooring with her passion for health, well-being and Feng Shui.

HOT TUB please anybody I NEED HELP!!!!!!!?
I recently bought a hot springs spa from a friend and it sat in his yard for a while. He tells me he did not have this problem when he used it. A white-yellow sticky scum keeps appearing on my water line followed by a rash and i can’t get rid of it. I’ve tried bleach, cascade, system flush and some other flusher, plus replaced all the hosing attached to all the pumps. The place i find most of the build up is in the heating element, looks like cocoons in there after only a couple days. All my chemical readings are right on. Can anyone help or is this tub a lost cause?????

Unfortunately, this sounds like what is referred to as “body film.” It’s a combination of the oils from your skin / lotion / deodorant, detergent left in your swimsuit, etc. You can try showering before you get in the spa, and when you wash your swimsuit, use vinegar instead of laundry detergent.

It may also be from hard water.

There are chemicals you can get at your spa store to take care of these. Make sure you’re buying spa-specific chemicals, as the higher temperature makes the water different from pool chemistry.
