DIY Solar Pool Heaters

Author: Anna Williams

There are several ways in which you, as an individual, can harness the sun's energy. One of these is installing and using a solar pool heater.

Solar pool heating systems are simple and inexpensive. Kits with unglazed plastic solar collectors are the cheapest ones around. Your pool can act as the thermal storage unit, and the pump which is used to filter the pool water can be used to circulate the water in the solar heating system. The simplest form of solar swimming pool heater can cost as little as 0. Some states also offer financial incentives, should you install one.

But if you really want to save money, then you can try this simple yet efficient solar pool heating collector. This easy-to-build swimming pool heating project will probably cost around per square foot. It will also require minimal maintenance.

For your DIY solar pool heater, you will be building a solar collector made from corrugated metal roofing, painted dark brown. The upper side of the panel will have a CPVC pipe. The bottom of the panel will have a slotted PVC pipe. Small holes should be drilled in the pipe, and spaced according to the grooves of the roofing sheet.

This device will be supported at the top and the bottom. You can make a simple rack out of treated lumber, with horizontal purlins to hold the metal panel. Or you can use part of your roof for support. Keep in mind that the lower side must slope downward to collect the water after it goes through the collector. The joints of the metal sheets should be sealed with silicone, to prevent water from leaking out.

The system will work like this: The filter pump will direct the water to the CPVC pipe at the top of the panel. Then the water will be released to the collector via the small holes. The water will then trickle down the panel, and the bottom PVC pipe will collect it and return it back to the pool.

This DIY solar pool heating project can help you save money, not just from the costs of buying a similar commercially made solar pool heating kit, but from installation fees as well. It might not look as good as one of the commercially available kits, but it can do the job comparatively well.

If you are looking for a good way to conserve on energy, and on the costs associated with heating your pool, but don't want to invest in a complete commercial installation, this is one option you can try.

Any experiences in regards to solar pool heaters?
I see prices vary by a considerable amount. I’m looking to extend the swimming season in Florida. Solar is for a small in ground pool.

My parents used a solar cover as the primary heat source for 2 different pools. 1 above ground and 1 in ground, both in Michigan. The in ground pool averaged about 82 degrees F most of the summer and much higher if the cover was on most of time in sunny weather.

if you are talking about the solar panels as the power source and the actual heating elements being in the pool….. check what the manufacturer recommends…. being on the roof, it is out of the way and not easily accessible to damage and out of sight…. but electronics and conductors do not like heat, so with a black roof and a hot sun may not be good …. solar panels work off the photons from light….not heat… maybe some place cool away from the chance of being damaged, aesthetic (pleasing to the eye) and with the most direct sunlight

You should be alright. The floor units should act in the system just like any other kind of floor drain or skimmer. Also, the solar heater should tie in by itself or if it is included in the original system, it would be right after the filter. so your cleaning unit should be irrelevant.

Are solar pool heaters more effective mounted on a roof?
I am looking at installing a solar panel heater on my pool. i don’t know if it will heat better on on my porch roof or just to install it over the railing on the deck beside the pool. The roof is only 12′ from the pool so it won’t be a problem to put it there. And what do I need to install on roof, can I build brackets or do I need to purchase something? Thanks

Has anyone set up a solar pool heater? Does it work?
Our gas pool heater adds a huge cost onto our gas bill. It needs maintenance now. Has anyone set up one of the solar pool heaters. They look cheap & not very durable – but do they work?

solar pool heater for inground pool possible with a pool floor cleaner thing?
at the bottom of our deep end, there is one of those things that automatically cleans and sucks up dirt that goes to the bottom. its not one of those vacuum things you buy separately that move around. its in the floor and im guessing its attached to a pipe somewhere underground.
i know that solar heaters utilize your existing pool pumps, but is that possible in our case? we have two things that pump heated water into the pool form our current heater and that sucky thing at the bottom.

Aint sure what you mean by directory listings, phone book? internet? If I were looking for one I would type solar pool heaters in my search engine. You might also try yahoo shopping. You can categorize them by price.

I have 2- 2′x20′ solar panels, black. They are attached to my above ground pool and existing filter pump. You can add more panels for underground pools. They work good, added 10 degrees on sunny days. Would work better if mounted to roof of house as ground mounting is a bit more difficult. You will want to get a solar blanket/pool cover also, as this helps add up to 10 degrees too. Plus, for the really hot days, it’s best to get a diverter kit for it also. Be sure you have enough hose for the location to pump and back to pool.
    I purchased mine off eBay.
