Maintaining Your Portable Spa

Author: Arthur Upfield

You've got you portable spa and you're the envy of the neighbourhood, but you now have to take care that your portable spa remains as fit and fine as you are for a long time to come. Maintaining your portable spa is of utmost importance to ensure your safety and well being. Here are a few simple steps to help you pamper your portable spa from time to time.

  • When you buy your portable spa, make sure you choose one where the filters are easily accessible and you don't have to pry the unit open to get to them. Clean your filters manually as often as you can; this will ensure the cleanliness of your water. If your portable spa has disposable filters, change them at regular intervals as advised by the supplier. Don't use detergents or any form of bleach to clean the portable spa. Spray away the dirt with a garden hose. You can also remove algae in the same way.
  • For soft built portable spa shells, don't use a brush or hard surfaced scrub, use baking soda or a nylon scrubber.
  • Avoid any ammonia-based cleaners for your acrylic spas. Try using a boat cleaner that is easily available at the supermarket.
  • Over a long period of time, grime, soap, body oils and other substances form a film around the plumbing lines. We recommend that you completely drain out the spa periodically, either manually or with a submersible pump. Do this at least once a month and remember to clean the jets first before draining.
  • Keep the core tub of the portable spa clean by using a net that is used to clean other big size pools. This way you will avoid stains, blotches and other discolorations. You can wipe off rigid stains with mild cleaners.
  • With the whole family using the portable spa, make sure to disinfect it from time to time. Water is a hotspot for breeding insects, so disinfecting it reduces the chances of allergies and other health risks. You can use an oxidiser, sodium dichlor chlorine and biguanide.
  • When the water turns grey, or starts having a peculiar smell, that's the time to change the water.
  • Have a look at the warranty; you may be entitled to some free servicing sessions.
  • When you drain out the water, look out for leaks and cracks and tend to them immediately. Have the portable spa serviced by a professional once a year.

Want to buy a portable spa and need help in deciding which one.?
I’ve recently moved into a rental home. After having had a swimming pool for more than 10 years and now none, I’m wanting to buy a portable spa. I’ll be moving to a home in 8 months and need help deciding. Should I get an inexpensive soft spa ($700) one like at Walmart or splurge ($2500) on one like a DreamMaker?

How can I get rid of rodents under my portable spa?
I have a Portable Spa in back yard. When I open the compartments where the pumps are housed I notice a bunch of mouse/rat droppings along with bits of chewed up foam. Is there a good long lasting way to keep the rodents out? I’ve tried fabric softener as I’ve heard that works as a good deterrent. I’m wondering if there’s another way. I could set traps but I think eventually more rodents will come back.

How to reset my portable spa?
It is wired for 220v or 115v. 115v can only run the jets or the heater. The jets and heater was ran at the same time and now nothing works what do you think.

Check the fuse or circuit breaker and the GFCI.
