Overview Of Swimming Pool Filters

By Scott Hares

One of the most important parts of a swimming pool pump system is the filter. Obviously, the pool pump filter is responsible for the removal of dirt, bugs, leaves and other debris that would otherwise make your pool unusable. That static nature of pools means that the water sits and collects what the wind brings. As time goes on, the water becomes unappealing, or even unhealthy to swim in.

This is where your pool filter comes in. With great efficiency, it remove particulates that contaminate your swimming pool. Today, there are as many different kinds of pool filters as there are different swimming pool pumping systems, and using the correct one for your system is key to an energy efficient system.

The different types of filters:

Three different types of swimming pool pump filters make up the bulk of availability. Cartridge filters, sand filters, and diatomaceous earth, or DE filters.

The diatomaceous earth filter is able to remove the most tiny of particulate present in any pool water. Made of a material with a consistency of fine powder, these filters are top of the line.

The sand filled filter allows for a higher throughput of water than do the diatomaceous earth filters due to the more corse sized sand used. On the other hand, the filtering ability of the sand filled filter is not capable of removing the fine particles that the DE type of filter can.

You can optimize your filter use simply by choosing the correct filter for your pool, your system, your particular needs. The size of your pool is a big decision maker in which filter is right for you. Your local pool specialist can help you calculate all the many different variables required for choosing the correct filter for the more popular pool setups in your area.

A good ballpark figure for pool pump filters is around , but final cost depends a lot on which manufacturer and model is right for you. Keep your pool well maintained and clean, you can enjoy many a safe, refreshing swim on those warm summer days with friends and family.

Where can I find colored pool light filters?
My friends and i are looking for a filter that we can put over a pool light. We don’t want an actual pool light, just a cover that is colored so that the normal white light would appear a different color (red, green, blue, etc) when the filter is on, but we would like the filter to be easy to take off.

I’ve looked around, even googled it, and can’t find much of anything to help me in my quest for colored pool filters… A specific store would be helpful.

I have worked at a pool store for 3 years now. We sell a product called Muratic Acid. You would soak your filter in a solution of 3 parts acid to one part water for no more than 5 min. You can do this as often as you need to. Also when you squirt your filter down with the hose, never spray from the outside in. Always spray from the inside to push all particles to the outside.

What is a good acid based cleaner to clean pool filters?
We have an above ground doughboy pools with a pump. (You can buy at any Wal-mart) We have been reusing the filters that go in the pump but they haven’t been getting as clean enough. We found on line where these can be cleaned using an acid based cleaner, but what? Need something affordable so we can keep reusing filters. (Wal-mart ALWAYS sells out) Only serious answers please.

Our local energy compnay said that running at 8 hours at night instead of 24 will save 72 bucks per month.

start with 10 hour at night (better rates) then work down from there according to how clear it is. every three days you can move the hours down or up depending on how clean the pool stays. we alwasy have to do extra after storms.

check yoru local energy companies website to see what are best hours for your locale.

DE does filter down to the micron level but a large 320-420 sqft cartridge filter (420 min) will do almost as good a job but more than make up for it in ease of maintenance, less energy consumed and water wasted.

If you are into aquariums a DE filter will make the water almost transparent, just like the glass you are looking through. If you don’t have glass on your pool then you do not need DE!

My advice is to you to invest in a flow gauge. When correctly installed on your Equipment you can see what your gallons per minute are and use that to calculate how many hours your pump needs to operate to turn your water over once per day. Use this as a starting point since your pool may need more hours in the summer time.

Best pump on the market is a pentair intelliflow, 4 variable speeds 4×160 but if you don’t have a spa you really only need the smaller pump to do a pool. With it you can set your flow to 15 gpm and run your 15,000 gallon pool pump 16.667 hours per day. Sounds like a lot of money but at that flow the 3hp version is only drawing 270 watts and the smaller version will be much less.

    You’re welcome!!

Where can I get a Good Pool sand filter for as little money as I can spend? I need to replace ours and I know that you guys know where all of the great stuff is on the web.

Could I please get some advice on diatomaceous earth pool filters?
Specifically, I was told that because it filters far more efficiently than my current fan filter, that I would be able to run the filter far less. My pool is between 12-15,000 gallons. My pump is 1 1/2 hp (can’t tell you what the through put on it is). My goal: run my filter less by 25-40% while maintaining the current water quality. Thank you.
