How to Clean a Sta-rite System 3 Cartridge Swimming Pool Filter

Author: Dave LeBeau

The Sta-Rite System 3 Cartridge Filter is an excellent swimming pool filter and will serve you well if you keep it maintained and cleaned properly throughout the year.

The Sta-Rite System 3 Modular Media Cartridge Filter comes in several different sizes - 300, 400, 450, and 500 square feet. The 300 sq. ft. filter is sufficient for most standard size swimming pools, but for pools over 20,000 gallons, the 450 or 500 sq. ft. filter would be recommended.

For most swimming pools with a Sta-Rite System 3 Cartridge Filter installed, cleaning the filter quarterly is sufficient. Follow these steps to clean a Sta-Rite System 3 Cartridge Filter.

Turn Off Pool Equipment - make sure you turn off the pool equipment. If possible, turn off the circuit breaker for the pool equipment so the filter will not come on while the filter is disassembled.

Relieve Filter Pressure - Open the air release valve on the top of the filter in order to relieve the pressure from the filter.

Drain the Filter - Remove the Filter Drain Plug from the bottom of the filter in order to allow the water to be completely drained from the filter.

Open the Filter - while the water in the filter is draining, remove the Posi-Lok clamps from the outside of the filter. You won't need to unscrew the clamps all the waya€¦ just enough to slide the Posi-Lok clamps up and off of the filter tank top.

Remove the Filter Top - once the water is completely drained from the filter and the Posi-Lok clamps have been removed, carefully remove the filter top and set it out of the way. Be careful not to damage the pressure guage and air release valve on the top of the filter tank top.

Remove the Filter Cartridges - carefully remove the filter cartridges one at a time by pulling straight up on the filter cartridge until they slide off the outlet tubes on the tank bottom.

Clean the Filter Cartridges - using a high-pressure hose attachment, thoroughly clean the filter cartridges removing as much debris as possible from the cartridges.

Clean out the Inside of the Filter - Spray out the inside of the tank bottom to remove any debris.

Clean the Air Bleed Strainer - Clean off and remove any debris from the air bleed strainer. The air bleed strainer is attached to the air bleed tube coming from the tank bottom.

Replace the Filter Cartridges - put the clean filter cartridges back into the tank bottom. Make sure the arrows on the top of the filter cartridges are aligned properly with the outlet tubes on the tank bottom. Make sure the air bleed tube comes up through the middle of the small cartridge.

Replace the Filter Top - carefully replace the filter top.

Close the Filter - replace all of the Posi-Lok clamps until tight. It might be necessary to gently hit the clamps with a rubber mallet in order to tighten the clamps enough to eliminate any leaks.

Replace the Filter Drain Plug - replace the filter drain plug. If necessary, use teflon tape to prevent leaking.

Test the Filter - with the air release valve on the top of the filter open, turn the filter on until a solid stream of water is shooting out of the air release valve.

Close the Air Release Valve - close the air release valve until there is no water being released.

That's Ita€¦ Your Sta-Rite System 3 Cartridge Pool Fitler is Clean! - make a note of the filter pressure (psi) immediately after cleaning the filter for future use.

That would be the spider gasket under the multiport valve. You can pick one of these up at your local pool store. They are extremely easy to replace, just undo all the screws holding the top of the valve in place and it will lift off. Pull the old gasket out, put the new one in and put it all back together. Don’t screw the bolts in too tightly though or you can experience leaking.

    pool filter?
as a owner of a new pool how many hrs should the filter be on . I live in the state of florida,
and would it be best to run it day or night

First make sure the pool is full of water. If the watery level is not high to fill the skinners, then you get no water to the pump.

Sounds like you pump has lost it’s prime. Take the cover off the strainer basket by the pump, make sure there are no leaves in the chamber, (be sure to check where the chamber actually drains into the pump) and fill the chamber with water.

Then replace the cover while making sure the cover has a good gasket and that it makes a good seal. Turn on the pump and let it run 1-2 minutes.

You might need to try this 4-5 times.

If none of this works, you either have a leak in the pump seal, the chamber that holds the basket by the pump, or in a line running from the pool to the pump. This leak is letting the pump pull in air instead of water.

    Good luck.

    Need more information….
    How big is the pool?
How big (gph) is the pump?
What kind of filter..sand, cartridge, or DE?
Are you using an automatic chlorinator?
Time of day only matters if you have an automatic chlorinator.. With automatic chlorinator, the pump should start mid-late morning & run into the heat of the day, because the sun burns it away.
I have a 20X40 pool.DE filter with a large pump, mine runs around 4 hours..My neighbor has the same size pool, sand filter…he runs his 6 hours or he is forced to add more chems..

When my pool filter is set to filter air blows out one of the jets?
Trying to open the swimming pool. We filled the basket with water and set the filter to backwash, rinse, and then filter. When it got to filter, it only blew air out one of the 2 jets. What’s going on? It doesn’t look like any water is running through the plastic window of the pump. Is it possible I have a leak in the pipes? How can I tell?

Pool maintenance usually falls on the tenant. You are going to need to read your lease to figure out who pays for this. Most likely it is you, but your lease may state otherwise.

The problem you face is common.
The only solution is to go the a higher grade of polyester filter replacement instead of paper.
You should check your newspaper want ads, Craig’s List & garage sales for used equipment.
You can also list that you are looking for the filter on Craigs list.
You can also put tarp over it, when not in use.

How can I make a sand pool filter for a above ground pool?
the pool is an easy set 13 x 3.6 metal frame pool, the origional paper filter gets cloged over nite, and ive checked out other pool filters and there priced three times as much as the pool itself. I have a good pump, just need a good little more maintance free filter. tried a new paper element.. same thing.
Gimme some suggestions! cleaning that paper filter every day, sometimes twice a day is getting old.

Who is responsible for the swimming pool filter when renting a home?
We moved into our rental home in December 2008. Our home has an in-ground swimming pool. We had the pool professionally opened on May 7th. The pool company said the filter is broken and needs to be replaced. The cost of replacing the filter and having it installed is $1300. I contacted the home owner and she said they don’t have the money to replace the filter at this time. Who is responsible for replacing the swimming pool filter?
I also wanted to know if it would be OK to deduct $1300 from next months rent to pay for the filter?
