5 Things to look for when choosing a swimming pool cover

Swimming pool covers come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and general types. There are solar swimming pool covers that work to keep the water warm as well as warm the water using the suns heat. Safety pool covers do just what it says it does, it keeps the swimming pool safe from unwanted entry of the humans or animals. In ground and above ground winter swimming pool covers, keep dirt, debris, and animals out of your pool during the winter season. It also prevents growth on the inside of your swimming pool that can be caused by the winter elements.

Here are a few things you should look for when shopping for a pool cover for your above ground or in ground swimming pool.

1. Find a swimming pool cover that is strong and sturdy. The cover should not only keep your swimming pool clean, it should add safety as well for humans and animals alike. It should prevent accidental drowning and dirt and debris from entering the pool.

2. Make sure the swimming pool cover conforms to state and local law requirements. Some areas require that a certain size and depth of pool be covered when not in use. There are specific requirements that these covers must meet. Check with your local authorities to ensure that your swimming pool cover meets the requirements needed.

3. Make sure your chosen swimming pool cover comes with a good manufacturer

Your best bet is to rent one from the hardware store. Should come with big, heavy duty bits as well.

Are the concrete anchors “drop in” anchors that you would then put a bolt into? If so, drill a hole the same size as the outer diameter of the anchor.

What size rotary hammer drill to install pool cover anchors?
I need to install a loop-loc pool cover and was wondering what size of rotary hammer drill I’ll need . I have to put 24 concrete anchors into the concrete surrounding the pool so the loops of the pool cover can attach to them. The brass anchors are ¾” and the hole needs to be 2” deep.

What type of winter pool cover works the best?
Hi, I live in Wisconsin and need to purchase a pool cover for our recently purchased above ground pool. I see there are some that are held down by clips and some with a cable and wench. Which works better? Are the super expensive ones the best or will a middle priced one work well? Pool is oval 16×32. It is super windy where we live and of course freezing cold. What needs to be done to prepare the pool for winter? Thanks

What is the cost for a swimming pool safety cover?
I am buying a house with a pool and was wondering what the cost would be for a manual or automatic pool cover. Also, as a comparison, the cost for a safety fence. The pool is a smaller lap pool.

Is a solar pool cover more effective when the filter is on or off?
It is a bright and sunny day today and I was wondering what would be most effective in heating up our 18′ round pool:
    1. Leave the filter off all day and just let the cover sit and do its job.
    2. Keep the filter on and the water ciruclating all day.
    3. Leave the filter off for about an hour and then circulate the water for a few minutes each hour.

I’m not sure… Also, does water ontop of the cover decrease it’s effectiveness?

What are you trying to accomplish with a pool cover – to keep the pool clean? safety purposes? heat the water?

A mesh cover will allow dust and dirt to pass through into your pool water, which can result in the use of more chemicals and cleaning. A solid cover will keep the pool clean, reduce evaporation, and in some cases, add to the safety of your pool, and retain heat in the water. A solar blanket will just add and/or retain heat. The problem with them is when the wind blows, you’ll find your blanket bunched up by the side of the pool.

The type of pool and the surrounding deck may affect your options as to what type of pool cover you can use. An inground pool with concrete deck, and with no “obstacles” can support just about any type of cover. By obstacles I mean no ladders or rails that protrude out of the water, rock formations that are situated at the edge of the pool (with no deck space between rock & coping), etc. Sometimes these obstacles can be overcome… just depends.

Above ground pools with a deck that surrounds the entire pool will also support most pool covers. Special wood deck anchors are used for them. If there is no deck, or just a partial deck, you’ll need to use the type of cover that cinches tight around the pool wall, just under the lip or coping.

If you go with a cheap, poorly made cover, you are going to probably have to replace it year after year. If you go with a nicer cover, it will last you many years and will have a warranty. I have had positive experiences with the cover clips, but you might also want to consider the water weight bags and a clear, plastic wrap type sealant in addition to the clips. I’m gonna guess that running the filter may help it to warm faster. I’m also gonna guess that the water on top of the cover may slow the heating a little due to evaporative cooling. It is possible, however that the water on the cover may actually “lens” the sunlight, and amplify it. I doubt it, but it is possible.
