Things To Consider In Purchasing Pool Heaters And How Minimize Cost From Usage

Author: Chris Turley

We all love swimming pools because it is a naturally controlled environment. You can control the influx of water, the presence of microorganisms and even the chemistry of the water. Unlike beaches, current is dictated by the gravity of the earth. It is naturally salty and you cannot do anything about it. Fresh bodies of water, comes naturally streaming at most of the time. It may not be salty but when water becomes murky, you do not treat it with anything. You just let it clear for itself. Swimming pools are the safest man-made body of water simply because you can purify the water, you can filter it, you can mix the chemicals to create a neutral ph of water and water problems can be easily taken cared of since you can drain them and do scrubbing.

Those are just the basic features. You can even do more for your pool pebble so that you can swim on it night or day without regard for temperature. Heaters are effective in manipulating the temperature of your pool. However, how hot it can be will be according to homeowner. Efficiency is really needed in here because people have varying preference for the temperature they want in a bathing.

So how do you select these devices? These are few of your considerations:

•You have to determine the size of the heater- this is done by determining the size of the pool as well as knowing the outside temperature in your area. This allows you to determine how efficient your heaters can be.

•Know the type of heater you want to use. There are several types in the market today. They can be gas, liquid or electric source. This is important because you will be basing your savings in here.

•You also have to consider your budget.

It is normal if your electric consumption to rise if you will be using electric heaters. For the other types, you cost will variably go up for the fuel source. Therefore, this can also be an important factor in determining which type you want. However, if you want to save a lot of money from using these heaters, you have to know some tips. You have to check this out:

• Be certain with the temperature that you want. Use a thermometer to be precise.

• Use the lowest setting for your thermostat, which still gives you a favorable temperature.

• Do not forget to cover your pool pebble when not in used. This way, you can help in the insulation.

• Have your heaters checked up from time to time to avoid costly repairs.

• Strictly follow the manufacturers guide on how to use them. This way you will be guided accordingly.

Always remember to choose the most convenient device for you. One thing for sure, you really have to be ready for the cost in obtaining them and the cost after using them. Nevertheless, you will still have the privilege of enjoying your swimming pools no matter what the temperature is.

    Need Pool Help – Heater?
I want to turn my pool heater on but for it to turn on the pools’ pipes have to go a certain way.

    The pipes are:
    Spa Return
    Pool Return
    Spa Return
    Pool Cleaner
    Spa Main Drain
    Pool Main Drain
    Skimmer

please tell me which has to be open and which must be closed.

You need at least one suction line and one return line open. Judging by the valve arrangement there, you have filtration, sanitizing and heating equpment doing double duty. One set for both spa and pool. Usually the spa will have an overflow going to the pool either in a waterfall type arrangement for spill over or a set of pipes for an under deck to pool side wall overflow.
Usually in normal operating, you’d have Pool skimmer/ Spa Main drain at a 50/50 setting and spa return a tad over 50% open, the pool return being just under 50%. That takes water from both but adds a bit more to the spa so that it overflows into the pool. It helps clean the spa and pool’s surface of debris and keeps both circulated and heated . This setting is for use when you’re just using the pool or when no activity is taking place out there at all. It’s up to you if you want the pool main drain open, you’ll just have to balance the other settings to get that spa to pool overflow happening.
If you want the spa heated, you open the spa suction ( main drain) and spa return, close the pool skimmer/main drain and pool returns. This allows only the spa to circulate, sanitize and heat. Otherwise you’d be trying to heat the whole pool up to 104 F which would be plenty expensive. :)
By the sounds of it, the “pool cleaner” you have is a suction based one and probably plugs into a fitting on the pool wall. Unless you’re actually using the cleaner, keep that valve shut.
Keep an eye on your pool/spa after changing the valve settings. If you mess up, you’ll see the spa start draining. You don’t want it to run dry. Just balance the valves to get that overflow for “normal” operations. I’d mark it on the plumbing with a magic marker so that it’s a quick changeover next time too. A lot is also going to depend on how everything was plumbed up too ( number of 90′s and length of runs). You may have to experiment a bit to get the right settings.

try contacting the manufacturer for an owners manual.

Okay after reading your question (which is way too long and takes forever to get to the point) I think you just need a cheap pool cover? If that’s the case, just get a large painter’s tarp and stretch it out across the pool. Use rocks or bricks to weigh it down. It may look ghetto but it’ll work!

Swimming pool covers, rental house with odd debris filled pool . Need cover advice!?
Ug, I sympathize with pool owners now! However can you afford one of these things in CA?? This is all the info I have on the problem, a bit long… sorry!

I am paying an absurd extra amount of money to rent a house with a pool and spa. I mean I now know I’m paying over $600 more for a house with a pool than the similar house next door without!? Not knowing better, and with only one week to find a place, I must eat my own mistake and burn good money. The landlord is the ultimate cheap skate and neighbors had to put a lean on this property because she wouldn’t fix the rotted joint privacy Fence. This is mandatory, let alone all the other needed repairs, especially a broken spa heater that in now 4 months she hasn’t fixed, but instead driven the pool guy to quit by not paying him for trying to keep the stuff out of this pool. We pay her to pay him. All because my DH thought it would help my illness to have a warm spa. :-(

The evil pool (worst the pool guy ever say) is in the shade of 5 CA Pepper trees which the LL won’t cut down. I’m new to this climate, but since I’ve been here, I can’t see how any idiot could be suckered into believe these trees are evergreens and good for pool shade! Anyway, there is sun for 4 early morning hours on this thing. Very uninviting so far. All winter, a neighbor warned me, dead pepper tree leaves fall in each day in high winds that never end. Spring….. first the greens blossoms, then the weak dead leaves, green leaves, and I thought seeds or husks. Now, STILL dropping dead leaves, like a shedding cat, and now these hard greed peppercorn fruits, millions of them, will be falling in a few weeks. Rain or shine, this thing can’t even be controlled with 3 times daily cleanings which I refuse to do all winter too. I’m disabled and can’t keep it up. Left for even a day, the pumps clog and baskets split, the pumps sound like air compressors gone wild in the middle of the night. It’s an evil monster!! Anyway, the absurd cold pool was once painted dark blue too. The paint is bleached to spots and streaks. The worse feature besides being under the pepper trees and shade, is the shape of a triangle (@24′ by 24′ at least) with a 12′ round deep end on the point, barrier than 9′ useless spa. If I were to buy a cover, the length is 36′ by 24W, but sliced in some space age shape, or Egyptian symbol fallen over. A wasted of half a cover!

The picture I try to paint is this is a rental house I care nothing about and plan to leave in a year. Think jury rigging, homemade, scrap… just as long as the solution works and I can do it. :-)

I can’t get rid of the trees. I can’t afford an expensive cover since I’m out of this place when the year lease is up. Not to mention, how does one get a cover for such a shaped pool? The pool came with no cover or anything for cleaning than the basics. I’d drain the thing and ignore it if it was allowed in CA. :-(

I need any reasonable suggestions people have for keeping the crud from the pool mall year round. Leaf nets it seems have to go over winter covers?? Plus cost a lot… I had thought I found hang it under the silly trees and run the other side to the house for a complete back yard cover.LOL I don’t know why one costs so much anyway. Seems there would be a summer version or something!

Solar covers are also something that I could leave on that water all year. I’m back to the cost and shape again… I wish there was huge spools of scrap bubble wrap about. A triangle and circle might do, but I find no options.

OK…. let me know what you all come up with! Hope this makes sense. I’m sick and doing my best to make sense!

I found a few pics of the pool. not great, but you can see it’s odd.

Sorry about the length… can’t edit it now. I have a huge dose of morphine and getting to the point.

Thought about a tarp for solution, but the winds are so strong here, even my porch tarp has grommets getting ripped out. If I could find something more like a screen of mesh, just so the wind can get through…

Is there bulk bubble wrap anywhere?
TY pool guy! I was eyeballing some various pond netting. Looking for something with stretch, not plastic deer or bird netting. I’ve made cat fence from this stuff and it tangles on itself. Might this work out?

TY! For the landlord info too. I had to turn off the gas to the heater that no longer works. i could smell it all around the pumps. Mixing water, electricity and gas is a recipe for disaster. I was debating if i should just play dumb and turn it back on then call the gas company about a leak? As for the pool, I think it will be so full of crud by fall that I’ll have to call a health inspector. That is unless I can make a net cover. ;-)

I went to the three own pool stores and all of them know of my awful pool and the crazy nut the owns the house and hides in Montana. None will work for this house. It’s up to her now! TY for the rules!

I doubt there is going to be a site that will allow you to create what you are looking for. You will have to talk to a building contractor, or someone who can draw up blueprints. A website won’t be able to do this because of the number of variables involved. Building material, exact size, depth, thickness, color, physical location if it is possible, etc.
