My Significant Other wants to buy a hot tub/spa. I think it is a Frivolous Purchase. I need reasons to say NO.

Hot Tub Estimated cost: ,000 with "installation".
He does not understand that there will be additional costs, maintenance and it is in my opinion a stupid idea. Reasons:
1. Electrical Panal from the 1950's. The lights dim NOW when I plug in an electric heater
2. We need a new Furnace
3. We need to reside the house (Wood siding from 1870's)
4. I just spent ,000 on a European Cruise he wanted.

He has no financial restraint and often overdraws the checking account then dips into his limited savings. I don't want him to go broke yet he's put me in charge of the finances. If he buys this I will hand him all the bills but I know he will just spend all of his money until its gone. Yet if I say no, he gets mad at me. What other reasons can I give him?

you need to sit down and talk to him about his spending habits and if it doesnt change it will just get worse and get you into debt and cause arrguments and you`ll end up apart because neither of you will be happy if you dont nip this in the butt now it wont ever stop dont worry about making him mad or not its to your well being as well as his, if he wants the tub make him buy it with his own money and he has to do the up keep as well as up grade the electrical panal…. if this is something you might want just a little, than start saving only 50 bucks a week towards it and you`ll have it in two years.

I think you need to sit down and tell him that you have just spent $5,000 on a cuirse and that you dont have the money to be spending like this and remind him that there are things that need to be done in the house.

Are you talking about a big, brightly colored whirlpool or an oversized bath tub with jets? If you are talking about a whirlpool/spa bath tub, I would say skip it. It will end up being one of thoses over priced gadgets that you use a lot initially, then begin to avoid later. I have a beauiful spa tub that I never use anymore because jets are so hard to clean. They look moldy and slimy. I wash it with tilex, bleach, other stuff too. It still looks like yuck. When the jets are on they shoot out this icky sediment stuff and frankly, I wish that I just had an oversized tub without the jets to just soak in. Everyone that I know who has a tub with jets says the same thing!!! Don’t waste your money! As far as the finances go…I used to behave that way too. I stopped once I had the responsiblity to pay my own bills with my own money. I quickly understood why my spouse became angry when i would use my check card with out telling him. I quickly learned why I needed/had to be aware of each dollar’s destination.

Well if you just bought him a cruise that should be good enough! I’m sure they will have at least one hot tub on the ship tell him to get the use out of that!!

You will not use it for more than a month…maybe two….ask someone who has one or look in the for sale section of a paper and see how many are for sale….."Hardly used"

Looks like you have a "Spender" as a S.O.

Time for growing up and getting a little restraint.
