Actually, in most locales, with the price of gas, oil and kerosene being what it is, (in my area, kero is over 3.50/gal.), it’s either as economical or more so, to buy a decent size electric heater and use that. I operate a small shop buiding outside my home, where I repair kerosene heaters and vacuums, small appliances, etc. I’ve heated it with kerosene for years, till last year. I found a small electric wall furnace that runs on 220 volts, is quite efficient and heats the building more effectively on less money for the extra electricity than I was spending each month for kerosene. I feel better too, not near as much congestion in my lungs.

Thinking about getting a kerosene heater to supplement my home heat.Did some research on it,any comments on what kind or what size or pros and cons. Also, where does one buy kerosene(just paid $3.15 a gal for oil).

Beware of carbon monoxide. Anything that burns fuel emits fumes that can kill you. Every winter I read about deaths from kerosene heaters so please be careful. . .

  4. TUDE says:

That’s not good. I was camping one time and a lady had a kerosene heater in a tent about 20 yards from me. She died that night. They vent the exaust right into your breathing air. Not a good idea. Who wants a window open while they are trying to heat their home anyway. Better safe then sorry right?

  5. TOOL GUY says:

Make sure you have adequate ventilation. You may also have a low tolerance to the fumes. I would want a carbon dioxide alarm to be safe. Good Luck

Do kerosene heaters produce low or high levels of carbon monoxide?
If you’re running a kerosene heater in a trailer and you have the window cracked a half an inch and you begin to get a bad headache and feel kinda spacey, is that carbon monoxide poisoning even though the window is cracked to allow ventilation?

Do you use unvented portable Kerosene heaters?
I have used Toyostove Kerosene heater for many years to supply extra heat in the winter. I simply wouldn’t ever want to be without it because of the wonderful heat it gives. It cuts my house heat in half each year. I was wondering how prevalent they are and how many other people use them as a means of supplementary heat, or emergency heat if the power goes out. Do you own and use one? Do you like it? does it save on your heating bills as it does on mine? Just wondering.

Is there anything that can be done to eliminate eye irritation caused by kerosene heaters?
I use a kerosene/diesel burning heater to heat my work shop. It works well as far as heating the building, but I am experiencing eye irritation while the unit is burning. Kerosene seems to work better than diesel as far as this is concerned but is still a problem. Is there anything I can add to the fuel or any other steps that may help eliminate the irritation?

Low Flame and minimal heat on Dyna Glo Kerosene Heaters. Why?
I have 2 kerosene heaters. Both had wicks replaced last year. The flame barely reaches above burner on both. Did they install the wicks wrong? They are pinned wicks.
