Is it cheaper to turn off the spa, or leave it on.?

My Boss and I are at odds about which is cheaper, leave the spa heater on all night, or, turn it off for the 10 hours over night.
I say that it will cost more to re heat the water then we save, he says the opposite. who is right?

It will actually depend on a few factors. The heater equipment itself and the amount of water that it needs to keep heated.

With that said, the water heater in an average household is the single most electric draining appliance there is. In most cases the answer would be that it would cost more to keep it on over night.

It is true that there will be an energy drop once the water has reached a certain temperature but this will usually not equal the amount of energy it needs to keep it at that constant temperature.

If you really want to know. This is what you’ll have to do.
Figure out the energy consumption that it takes to get the water to the desired temperature and how long does it take? Assign a monetary value.

Figure out the energy consumption that it takes to keep the water at that desired temperature. Multiply this with how long you’ll need to keep it as such (in this case 10 hours). Assign a monetary value.

Which was higher? Still don’t know? I would assume that the energy consumption can also be affected by the outside factors. Is the spa outside? in the open? What is the outside temperature? Is it cold? cold enough to freeze the water if the heater was turned off? If it is, then I may have to agree with you. It might cost more to reheat the water then. Otherwise, it’s usually not.

Here’s a thought. Try turning it off every night for a month and see if your electric bill goes down.

If the heater is electric, leaving it on and making sure the spa has cover and is insulated is the best bet…..
