Inground pool/spa pump and return settings?

We just moved into a house with and inground pool and hot tub with water fall into the pool. There are 4 ways to set it the pool return spa return thing and I can have both open or one closed at a time and the skimmer and spa suction, same thing. What is day to day setting, and what should they be for using the hot tub?

Your have the following pipes to either open or close: Pool suction, spa suction, pool return, spa return. In normal operation you would draw water from the pool (open pool suction and close spa suction lines), and return water to both (pool return line fully open, spa return line full or partially open). This allows filtered water to return to both bodies of water and allow for the "waterfall" feature while preventing draining the spa. Some pools have a return line automatically designated for going to the spa when in "pool mode" so you can shut your spa line completely off. Try it and see if water still flows to the spa. If not, open up the valve to your preference. Other pools have a separate valve for spa overflow.
When using the spa open up spa suction and return and turn off pool suction and return. On some pools there are individual valves for each line, some have 3-way valves so that one valve can open or close either pool or spa suction or return lines.

Call a pool company and have them do an inspection of everything and then show you how everything works and ask them for the recommended settings. An expert will also be able to tell if your filters are okay or need replacing/refilling.
