Industrial Piercing Help?

Hello. I just got my industrial piercing Saturday, but I was wondering how long do I have to wait before I can change the jewelry? Oh, and also is it okay to go swimming at the beach? I know you're not supposed to go swimming at a pool or a spa, but the aftercare sheet I got didn't say anything about swimming at the beach. Thanks in advance!

it is best to wait until the piercing has healed to change the jewelry. industrials, like all piercings through cartilage can take up to a year to heal.

of course, if you start having issues with swelling or extreme discomfort, you can go back to the piercer and get the bar switched to two separate pieces of jewelry (I had to have that done with my vertical industrial just a few days ago)

as for swimming. you should avoid submerging the piercing in ANY body of water for at least the first couple of months. This includes pools, hot tubs, lakes, baths and even the ocean. the concern is dirty water (bacteria both naturally occurring and from other people) getting into the piercing that can give you an infection.

"Avoid undue trauma such as friction from clothing, excessive motion of the area, playing with the jewelry, and vigorous cleaning. These activities can cause the formation of unsightly and uncomfortable scar tissue, migration, prolonged healing, and other complications…Avoid submerging the piercing in unhygenic bodies of water such as lakes, pools, hot tubs, etc. Or, protect your piercing using a waterproof wound-sealant bandage (such as Tegaderm). These are available at most drugstores."

Standing bodies of water have loads of bacteria and also dry a fresh piercing out which is not good for healing.

It’s recommended you wait 3 months to change the initial jewelry, so your piercing can get a good heal. Unless the jewelry you currently have in is causing a problem, leave it alone. Should you have to change the jewelry go to your body piercer and have them do it for you.

When you change the jewelry before the piercing has a good heal on it, you only cause more irritation and prolong healing by tearing away fresh cells that you need to heal your piercing and can cause damage to the fistula cause excessive scarring.

‘ It is recommended that you don’t change, twist or fiddle with the jewellery for 6 months.’

Wait at least 4 months to change jewelry.

Wait at least 6 months to go swimming in any body of water.

If you change jewelry early or swim early, you are only risking infections and irritation.

If you go to the beach, keep your head out of the water (only go navel deep to prevent waves accidentally hitting your head) and keep sand away from your ear too!

As soon as you get away from the beach, use some H2Ocean to clean off any dirt you might have gotten on it.
