Pros And Cons - Above Ground & In Ground Swimming Pools

Author: Robert Wells

It really should be no decision at all. A conventional in ground cement pool is always the better choice of swimming pools of you can afford one..Or is it?? Why not stop and look at all the pros and cons before you accept this logic on face value because the fact is the world is full of people who regret having an in ground pool installed.

To start of with the price discrepancy between the two types of pools has gown by astronomical proportions. Believe it because it's not at all uncommon now for people to pay over a hundred thousand dollars for the same pool that cost maybe twenty- five thousand a decade ago.

Also understand that a conventional pool builder is going to do his best to try to up-sell you on every cost enhancing feature that there is. On the other hand, you can buy an above ground pool in one complete package that includes not one up-sell sales pitch. One set price for your pool.

If you think that you're going to make any profit on your home by having a conventional in ground pool installed, you couldn't be more mistaken. The fact is that when it's all said and done, you will have actually lost money on the deal. The long and the short of it, is that there are much better ways to invest in a home.

At the same time, with the cost of an above ground pool as low as it is, you just don't take near the depreciation hit that you do an on an in ground pool. Also remember that your maintenance costs on an in ground pool will be substantially higher than on above ground swimming pools.

Really when it really comes down to it, the first big decision that people have to make when deciding on swimming pools, is whether to go with an above ground or an in ground built in. Sound like an easy decision to make? Well even if you can well afford a custom built in, there are still lots of viable reasons to go with either type.

As an example, far too many people approach the decision on a pool  like it's bringing home a puppy. Sure it sounds fun at the time but bear in  mind that a built in swimming pool lasts for years and years. This means that long after the kids have grown up and moved out you'll still be stuck with pool maintenance.

Also remember that the boom times for property improvements are long gone. The real estate market is flooded with foreclosed homes that have built in pools. What this means is that you just can't expect the money that you put into a pool to reflect back on the value of  your home like it used to.

So just like driving a new car off a lot, you're going to take financial hit on a brand new built in pool. On the other hand, with above ground swimming pools costing but a fraction of what what a built in costs, it only stands to reason that the  financial, depreciation loss would be substantially less.

Always remember that the reality is that you're only going to be using your pool for about half the year. Oh sure, in the planning stages you might think that you're going for winter swims. However; after a few of those, just like most people you'll probably find that it's much nicer to stay warm and dry on cold winter nights.

How much does it cost to heat an in-ground swimming pool?
How is the pool usually heated (gas/electric)? It’s an in-ground pool surrounded by concrete…How much money does it cost to keep it heated in the Chicagoland area?

  2. Dujo says:

My father uses a system that lays a hose out on the roof of your house and then a pump runs the pool water through the hose and it is heated by the sun during the course of the day. Try looking into a similar system, I think this is a cheaper way to go (though I admit, I am not at all expert in what I’m talking about here).

Nothing fancy. Pretty much the basic in ground pool. What do you think this will cost?

Can I leave the old liner in my above ground swimming pool and just put the new one over it?
I was wondering if it is necessary to remove my old liner from my above ground pool to put in a new liner. I thought it would be more beneficial to keep my old liner in and just put the new liner on top of it to serve as extra padding and protection. I was just wondering if anyone has tried it or if anyone knew if it would be better to take the old liner out and put the new one in.

No you cannot do it. Couple of simple reasons why if you look at where your liner reaches up to the side of the pool you have a moulded strip that goes around the top edge of it all the way around the pool. This strip hold the top edge of the liner which hooks into it to hold the liner up. It will not hold up two separate liners so your new one would constantly fall off.

One other reason you have fittings that screw in over the liner like your main drain and skimmer plate as well as return fittings. These require gaskets behind them to fit in nicely if you put the old liner behind them they will not fit in properly and you will most likely end up with a very big pain in the ass leak. Trust me you dont want to redo a liner it just sucks.

There is no benefit to putting a secondary liner in at all. If you want to improve the life of your liner just maintain your chemical balance well and before you install it check for small rocks and debris in the pool and any rough edges that might abrade or cut the liner being installed. Also dont forget duct tapeape the seams of your pool wall underneath the liner as it will help with leaks as well as provide a buffer for the liner not to fall into said seams and get pinched or sliced.

I also recommend if you have never installed a liner before or measured one out then to get a professional as if you get the liner measurements wrong or accidently damage it to badly your out a lot of money.

Necessary equipment for a liner install
    -Shop vac
    -a whole lot of patience
-at least two people to install itduct tapeape for seams
-pennies or lil pieces of the top part of the old liner to wedge in the top mold to hold the new liner in place while it sits in your pool.

Remember take your time its an expensive mistake to make

Do I need a permit to set a small $275.00 aluminum sided/above ground swimming pool, in South Florida?
I have a property in Hendry county, fl and I would like to buy one of those $275.00 aluminum sided/ above ground pools from Walmart they look kind of disposable pools, but seem to be lots of fun for the kids; and i wonder if i need a permit.

The particles could be too small for the filter to catch. You could try a concentrated clarifier to clump the particles together. This makes it easier for the filter to grab the particles. Usually 1oz per 10,000 gallons daily until it clears up. You want to make sure your PH is between 7.2-7.6 and if you use chlorine between 1-2ppm. You might want to keep the chlorine a little higher until it clears up. Was there visible algae when you put in the algicide?

How do you maintain an easy set 10 ft on ground swimming pool?
I have an on ground pool, and when I filled it I put in the chemicals that they told me to buy. One is an anti algea liquid. This liquid makes the water cloudy. Am I doing something wrong?
