I think all hot tub covers do the same thing after a couple of years. My first cover got so heavy I could hardly lift it. When I got a new one I took the old one apart and the styrofoam inserts were extremely heavy but they did not have any water in them. I think the steam must cause something in the water to be absorbed by the styrofoam. Perhaps calcium.

The cover I have now is around 3 years old and I noticed its starting to get heavier also

I live in a cold winter area and my hot tub puts out a lot of steam when you open it in the winter.

Not that I know of. We had to but a replacement cover when ours got so bad and heavy. It has a 10 year warranty against water retention. http://www.hottub-covers.com. was the cheapest that I could find.

If by retaining moisture, you mean water is soaking into the cover itself, you will need to patch, or buy a new cover for the cover (ha). Find out where the hole is in the cover, and if it can be repaired, do so. If not, you’ll have to buy new.

Try putting a tarp over your cover and see what happens. I know that is not what you really had in mind but I was thinking of a temporary fix until you find out what is causing it to retain moisture and can hopefully repair it or replace it.
