Chemicals Needed For Hot Tub Care

Author: Jstrange

Adding a hot tub to your home can be a real luxury but keeping your hot tub clean takes effort. Proper maintenance is very important to keep your hot tub in top running condition. Before you start cleaning your hot tub you should be aware of required pH balance, alkalinity levels, sanitizers, and oxidizers.

Sanitizers kill the bacteria that can grow in warm water. There are 3 types of sanitizers i.e. Chlorine, Bromine and Biguanide. Chlorine can be used in a different concentration in hot tubs. There are chlorine tablets and chlorine granules created specifically for hot tub use. Bromine is similar to chlorine but is less harsh on the skin and does not smell as strongly. In fact, the bromine tablets you can put in your spa are made of chlorine and sodium bromide. Most bromine solutions use a floating "brominator" that allows the bromine tablet to slowly dissolve into the water over time. Biguanide sanitizers are a non-chlorine, non-bromine product that kills bacteria by attacking the cell wall. The elimination of organics is accomplished with a hydrogen peroxide-based oxidizer used to a€œburna€ off the organic matter and keep the water clear. This system produces fewer odours than chlorine or bromine and does not a€œgas offa€ at spa temperatures.

Oxidizers: Ozone is released into the spa water to oxidize and destroy bacteria and other contaminants (viruses, algae, yeast, cologne, sun tan lotion, saliva, urine, etc).  Ozone is an oxidizer and  it reduces the work of the sanitizers and lowers the level of sanitizers needed in the spa to keep it clean. The ozone process requires that your hot tub is equipped with a piece of equipment called an a€œozonator.a€ Even if you have an ozonator, you will need to supplement your water with a low level of sanitizer like bromine or chlorine.

PH and Alkalinity Balance: Alkalinity Increasers increase the total alkalinity of your hot tub. Your goal for Total Alkalinity is 80-120 PPM. Total Alkalinity measures the waters ability to resist pH changes by neutralizing acid, acting as a buffer for your spa water. If your TA is high, it is hard to change the pH of your water. This is good if you have your water at the neutral pH level. When testing your hot tub water with test strips you may find that the total alkalinity of your water is too low despite the previous hot tub chemicals you have added to it.  You can increase your TA by simply adding Alkalinity Increasers  or baking soda to the water to resolve the problem.

Anti Foams: Soaps and shampoos can often lead to a build up of foam on the surface of your hot tub water.  Anti foams  will reduce the build up of foam within your hot tub.

Water Clarifier With use your hot tub water can become cloudy and merky, while still be clean and healthy to use.  When added to merky hot tub water Water Clarifiers can help to bring back the shine and make sure that fine particles get trapped in the filters of your hot tub

There are many good online sites where you can buy chemicals for your spa or hot tub. You can all the chemicals on The hot tub house website. They sell sanitizers, oxidizers, fragrances, balancers, anti foams, you name it.

Be sure to have the make and model of you hot tube as well as the make and model # of the pump and or heating assembly.

My hot tub is outside all year round, I don’t winterize it, I use it.
And I’m in the northern midwest, so yeah, it gets down to -40 here sometimes…
you need to get the model number (should be on the inside of the panel that you take off to get to the “guts” of the tub, try the panel on the side underneath the controls). and then call the manufacturer.

Does anyone know how old a “Paradise Spa” hot tub might be? It was there when I bought the house last year.
I’d like to know how old it is and where I might get parts for it. I didn’t winterize it correctly and the pump and filter housing busted when the water froze. :(

Sat on a hot tub while pregnant? Help?
My husband made an appointment at a spa to celebrate our 1 year anniversary. Now he says he canceled the hot tub and sauna part which were for a whole hour and I will just get a massage and facial because he heard from co-workers that pregnant women can’t sit on hot tubs. I don’t mind he canceled because my baby’s first but I am worrying because 3 weeks ago we went to Vegas and I sat on the hot tub, out doors when it was burning hot for about 10 minutes. Would this harm my baby? I don’t know how far along I am because my first doctor’s appt is this Tuesday. I know I must be around 7-9 weeks. This is my first pregnancy and everyday I find something new that I shouldn’t do.

I think “The Spa Guide ” sounds pretty boring, if you don’t mind my saying so.

You need something catchy that people find funny so they remember it.
What about, Blowin bubbles, or Spas and stripes, or warm fizzy water stuff, or You did what in the spa, or more hot air, or something really offbeat like what you must know before you buy spa parts, or a dog in my spa, or whatever.

If you look at the names the world knows now, they are really not names like “the worlds best internet search engine” or “the internet guide” of “how to surf the net”. We have Google, Yahoo, Facebook, Hotmail, all really catchy, off the wall stuff. You might try to come up with something left field.

I once wanted to name a small local business so I ran a competition in conjunction with the local paper (so the adds were free) and gave a prize of a dinner for two to a certain value. The restaurant donated the meal because they got free advertising and the next week everyone read the story in the paper, saw my new business name, saw my pic handing over the voucher. All in all, everyone was a winner. Might be worth a shot. Also, donating something to a school or charity in a small community can give you great coverage in local press and radio for a small price.

Hope this helps, good luck, Jackson.

hot water can affect the babies heartbeat, you also don’t want to boil a baby… 3 weeks ago was a bit early and probably did no damage, because the baby doesn’t even have skin yet just a bunch of cells.

    Enjoy and Relax.
