Information On Installing An Outdoor Hot Tub

Author: Mark Walters

A hot tub in your garden is a great way of getting a bit of peace and tranquility in the comfort of your own home. It's important to decide exactly where you're going to locate your hot tub, as it needs to be positioned on a solid surface, so make sure wherever you choose has space for concrete. You also need to decide whether it's going to be submerged in the ground or put on an existing structure, such as decking, as this can affect the installation process.

As well as space for the hot tub itself, you need to allocate room to the equipment that comes with it - typically consisting of a pump, filter, heater and piping, all of which need to be positioned a safe distance away from the tub itself. Check your instructions to make sure you've allocated enough room as space requirements can vary. You also need to make sure you have access to a gas line and plumbing and to ensure there's lots of space around your heater so it doesn't combust.

Next, make sure you thoroughly prepare your chosen location before you begin assembly as it will be hard to access once the hot tub is in place. You'll need to create concrete foundations for the hot tub and the equipment and, if you're using pre-existing decking, get an engineer to check the structural integrity of the wood to make sure it won't collapse. Also, if you're sinking the hot tub in the ground, make sure there's a 12 inch clearance all around at that it's not in contact with any soil.

Once everything is ready, you can begin assembling your tub. Individual tubs vary, but as a general rule, you should install the support joists and suctions before assembling the tub. You also need to make sure the external structure is watertight, so make sure to seal everything with silicon. Make sure your joists are sound as this will make your hot tub sturdy. Then build your tub upwards from the bottom, but don't bang it too hard or this will affect the structural integrity.

Nearly there now! Once the external structure is complete, move onto the internal parts. The bulk of this consists of the bench seat, which gives you somewhere to sit in the hot tub. Take care to make sure it's level and that you don't harm the structure of the tub when you install it. Also sand down the top rim of the tub to remove the risk of splinters and give you a nice finish. Then, after all your hard work, it's probably about time to check out the tub. Have fun!

I have always heard that no matter what you do not want bubbles in a hot tub. That being said, a very, very small amount diluted will be ok.

Id love to add bubbles to my outdoor hot tub-would this be safe or do I need a special type?
Can I make my own concoction?

for starters, you need to drain it every couple of months, then you will need to get testing kits and strips for the water and chemicals to clean it with what is appropriate for the type of tub you have….. Chlorine, sanitizer, water softener, alkaline, and calcium are a few… then read the directions, and follow what it says to do…….. Your best bet is to contact a pool and spa place and talk to them…. they would have a better answer than what any of us would……

These are the universal rules. The site listed above gives you a local contact to advise you further.

No matter where you decide to place your hot tub you need to make sure that the location has a solid foundation. What this means to you is that the foundation must be a uniformly firm, continuous, and it must provide a level setting. The recommended foundation is a concrete pad with a minimum thickness of 4 inches with steel reinforced cross bars throughout.

When installing your spa on a wood deck or balcony, the same load requirements must be met. Total load may be as much as 90 pounds per square foot. Remember that your hot tub weights about 700 pounds on its own, then when you add water and people, it could have a total weight of up to 4,000 pounds.

Regardless of the location that you decide upon, you need to be sure that the hot tub is not within 10 feet of overhead power lines and that you leave access to the internal equipment.

In order to complete maintenance or to make a needed repair, you will need adequate space to be able to reach the internal components. If your hot tub has external equipment you need to know that most city codes require that the equipment be at least 5′ from the tub, unless they are separated by a permanent solid barrier.

Well, one of the times that my family and I went to Banff we stayed at the Tunnel Mountain Resort Chalets. They are very nice chalets that all share a large outdoor hot tub. We very much enjoyed our stay.

    I hope this helps! XD
(Our chalet included, I believe, three bedrooms, a kitchen and dining table, one bathroom, and a small living room with a TV. It was very nice!)

what size circuit does an outdoor hot tub need?

  10. woodtick314 says:

Check your local code, but most require a 240V 50A GFCI protected circuit with a separate 20A 120V GFCI receptacle. The disconnect is available at home centers or electrical supply houses.
