What To Look For In A New Hot Tub Cover?

By Jake Plumer

The hot tub covers are an important part of the hot tub. There are a number of options that are available to the consumer when purchasing them, and you will want to think carefully about these choices before you make a buying decision. Some of the things that may affect your choice include the insulation factor, the safety of the cover with regards to children, and whether or not to place a lock on the tub cover. In this article, we will go over each of these factors in detail, because thinking about them carefully can allow you to make the best purchasing decision when buying the tub.

How much insulation do you think you will need with the tub? If you live in an area that is known for having very cold weather, it is a wise idea to spend a bit more money on a tub cover that has more insulation than normal. However, if you live in a tropical or desert climate, you will not need as much insulation as someone who lives in a colder area, and you shouldn't have to spend a lot for insulation unless you want to. When it comes to children, the tub cover should be strong enough to support a child's weight, and the reason for this is because it will prevent the children from falling into the tub, where they could drown if there is water present.

If you have children, another thing that you will want to consider is a lock. Children have a tendency to be curious, and this can become dangerous if they decide to play around with a hot tub cover. I generally advise parents to get a cover so that they can stop their children from getting in. The only way that the locked cover can be removed is if the owner puts in the right type of key combination. Not only will this stop children from getting in, it will block anyone who doesn't have the authorization to use the tub. The cover is an important part of the tub, and it can be pricey depending on the three factors discussed above.

However, it doesn't make much sense to spend a lot of money on a hot tub, and then turn around and be cheap when it comes to the cover. If water is in the tub, you will want to keep it as warm as possible. Since hot tubs are traditionally left outside, if you live in a cold environment, and you don't get a cover that is well insulated, the water could be too cold or even frozen when you're ready to use it. An additional reason why you will want to pay attention to the insulation of the cover is because of the energy efficiency that is associated with it.

Due to high energy costs, using a tub that is not properly insulated can lead to a high energy bill. There are a number of ways in which you can insulate the tub, and the cover is one of the most cost effective methods available. The energy efficiency of your tub is very important, and because the cover plays and important part of this, you will want to buy a good cover.

If you do you will certainly ruin the cover. If you want to fix it you will have to take out all the filler and replace it with the same size and shape of filler material that you took out. If you just spray expand a foam in there it will ballon out at different rates and it will be mis shaped and useless for a cover. would be a lot of fun to watch though. Use enough and it should explode.

How do you fix a cracked hot tub cover?
We live in michigan and snow has cracked one side of our hot tub cover. Is there a way to repair the broken side or brace the broken side without buying a whole new cover? Maybe even just replace the foam on the one side. It’s not just one crack its totally shattered.

  3. Mike says:

If there are zippers or some other means to open it and get the old foam out then you ought to be able to buy a new block of foam at the local builder’s supply, cut it to size with a hand saw and stuff it in there. You could even improve it by cutting some channels in the foam to fit 1×3 wood struts and glue the struts in with some foam compatible glue (maybe the poly glue that comes in caulking tubes – some it is made for gluing foam panels to walls).

It sounds like a fun project, sorry I’m not in Michigan to join in.

Squirrels are rodents and their front teeth continue to grow all of the time. If they don’t chew on things the teeth get too long. Squirrels will chew just about anything. They have chewed on the lead flashing on our roof plumbing vents, the heads of our sprinkler system, some garden pots made from resin and marble dust, the swing on the front porch, bird houses in the back yard…….

Remember, squirrels are just rats in cute fur suits.

If the foam is damaged there isn’t a cheap and easy fix. If the vinyl is damaged then the fix is easy and cheap.

Things you will need to repair the damaged vinyl:
    1. A can of waterproof vinyl glue suitable for patching vinyl. You can find this stuff at your local pool store. Its commonly used to patch holes in vinyl pools. It should cost no more then ~$20
    2. The same grade of material that your spa cover is made from, ideal the same colour. Typically, most spa covers are skinned with marine grade vinyl and your local pool store should help you with this again. Alternatively, an upholster should also help you with this. You will need enough material to cover the damaged area in order to make a patch plus a little bit bigger. So that means if you have a 2cm x 2cm damaged area make the patch bigger then the hole (like 3cm x 3cm). If your lucky they might give you some scraps for free.

Cut the patch so that it has rounded corners. This will ensure that the edges won’t uncurl and the patch comes off. Apply a liberal amount of glue to the underside of the patch and flatten it down. Allow the glue to dry for at least 24hrs.

    And BAM your done.

I think I would call a local plumbing supply store (not a giant chain). If they don’t know, they may have a plumber there is the store who they can ask. Happened to me once when I had an oddball question.
