There are five different tyes of chlorine used in swimming pool and hot tubs. It is not recomended to use chlorine in a hot tub because of the higher temps cause chlorine to be less stable then Bromine. Bromine which is also a Halogen as is Chlorine is more stable to sanatize at higher temps. Sodium Dichlor. is the most common chlorine used as a shock for swimming pools and hot tubs since it is not as harsh as Calcium Hypochlorite of trichlor. The most expensive is Lithium Hypochlorite which is very easy on us humans… I recomend to my customers to use Bromine a a base and then use a non-chlorine shock for the basic shocking and sanitizing. Be sure to use a CD Ozonator also.

Be sure to read the labels carefully and make sure they swimming pool chlorine and Hot Tub chlorines are the same percentage. (Please do not use sodium hypochlorite (Bleach) in your hot tub) Also do not sweat into Calcium Hypochlorite, if you do it will ignite. Always add a dry chemical to plenty of water, never water to a dry chemical.

    Hot tub chlorine tablets?
I got a lot of chlorine tablets given to me, the kind used for a pool. I say they are the same and we can use them instead of the powder form we are currently using in the hot tub. my husband says no…anybody know.?

  4. Jonathan says:

if you use tablets for a fiberglass or acrylic hot tub,you need to pay more attention to the alkilinity it will rise from tablets….

    Hello,

You haven’t said where you live and how cold it gets.

But, by and large, putting tiny quantities of chlorine or bromine into will not make a substantive change in the freezing point. The molal freezing point depression constant for water is about 1.86 degrees C/mole. So if you have a 1M solution of NaCl or NaBr, it melts at about -3 degrees C. or about 27 degrees C. You get twice the depression because each mole of NaCl gives 2 moles of particles. A 1M solution is over 50,000 parts per million of NaCl, That would be considered a salt water hot tub and all of your fittings, etc. would need to be rated for salt water.

You might surround the pipelines with heating tape and have a backup power source. Or else attach the backup power source to a pump which would circulate the hot tub water through the pipes until the power comes back on again.

I agree with gindy 100% as the smell is not from the chlorine but the left overs. Only way to eradicate the smell if not outside is to ventilate the room well. Not some small fan but a vent fan that is built to handle large quantities of air. Maybe 3 air changes a hour to get rid of the smell.

We recently began running our hot tub in our garage(attached to house) and the entire house smells of chlorine?
We are using chlorine to sanatize the hot tub not bromine. Would bromine be a better choice to cut down on the smell? Our house smells like the YMCA haha

  8. Richard M says:

How much bromine or chlorine do I have to put in my hot tub to prevent it from freezing if there is no power?
I have an out door hot tub. Sometimes there are power failures in the winter. The tub is insulated but the lines to the motor, which are about two inches in diameter are not. There are 425 gallons of water in the tub. What does the water/bromine(chlorine) ratio (i.e. ppm for example)have to be to prevent the water in my feed lines from freezing.

  9. Pandoras Box says:

Sex in a hot tub, chlorine kills sperm?
We had a party a couple nights ago, you know the kind where everyone gets waaaaay too drink.

Well after almost everyone had gone and my husband went to bed, I was in the hot tub with a guy my friend had brought. Well we started flirting, and he gave me a backrub, too many drinks + good looking guy long story short we had sex in the hot tub.

Now I heard chlorine kills sperm, do I have to worry about getting pregnant? He didn’t wear a condom and he did ejaculate inside me, but wouldn’t some of the water be inside me too?

    I’m freaking out.

  10. aqx99 says:

That is an old wives tale. Yes, you can get pregnant in a hot tub. If you are still within the 72 hour window, get emergency contraception. You should also get tested for STDs and not have unprotected sex with your husband until you get the all-clear from the doctor.
