HELP, trying to build my own HOT TUB.?

Im not much of a builder. But I did think of a way I think may work.

5 large pieces of rectangular wood
Make a box with the wood that has a bottom
Nail it all together
Put silicone or whatever on all the edges to seal it in.
Put something for steps inside.
And use a piece of big meta or steel as a cover.

Ill just use hose watr to fill it and heat up rocks and put them in to heat it.

Will this idea work? If not, what can I do to make it better. What kind of wood should I use. Help.

It is possible. You will have to consider what the first guy said about the weight of the water. The only way that the wood won’t blow apart due to the weight of the water is to re-inforce the corners with angle iron and metal or nylon straps (really strong ones) around the top, middle and bottom of the tub.

Wood rots when next to water so you will have to spend the extra money to get Marine plywood at least 3/4 inches thick. Otherwise it will never last.

Putting silicone on the edges won’t last long either. You should look around and find a vinyl or plastic liner to make it water tight.

How will you drain it? Clean it? I’d install a drain valve near the bottom on one side of the unit.

Have you thought about putting a pump and filter on it? This would not only keep it clean, it would give you the option of having jets.

You should re-think the hot rock method of warming the water also. There are places that sell hot tub equipment where you can purchase a heater since the rocks would cool too quickly and be a total pain to work with.

To make a cover, you can buy some sheet styrofoam and cover it with vinyl. Most hot tub lids are built this way. They are light weight and help keep the heat in.

    Good luck with your project.

Given that water weighs about 2 pound per pint, and you would likely use many many pints to fill it, i think a rethink might be good. Also, where are you going to heat the rocks? and what type of rocks? Some rocks explode with heat! Silicone is not ideal for pottable water, finally, any metal used as a cover will be very heavy.
