Help, How can I stop a dog from chewing?

My dog decided on desroying everything form stuffies (not her own) to a hot tub cover. At first I thought she had a leather fetish. But she destroyed cleats, an outside waterhose, sneakers, stuff animals, wrist band off a watch, today she quitely ate the hot tub cover . I only caught her fore she decided to rip tho top part of it. I am getting her a muzzle for now. but is there another way. telling her no and smacking her butt doesn't work she stops chewing what is chewing on to find something else right afterwards on front of me like it's a game to her. The sad part is that everything is put away like they are suppose to be. she will climb to get them. reach on tables. You name it she will do it. She has lots of toys to play with outside and in. The kids play with her. She always has plenty of food and water. So she isn't hungry. I am afraid to leave alone fore I wonder what she will eat next.

Dogs are natural chewers and diggers. Its part of the history and inherited traits of all dogs. To help break the cycle of chewing things you don’t want your dog to chew, have actual chew bones to offer every time she starts to chew something you don’t want her to chew on. When you see her chewing on something you don’t want her to, just switch the bone for the item, if you do this consistently, she will get the idea and besides the bones taste better than the other things, especially if you get the flavored ones. In addition, there is a spray you can spray on things that does taste bad, I wouldn’t spray it on everything, just the things she keeps going back to the most, but again when she goes for that item, offer the bone instead. For when you leave her alone at home, have you crate trained her? If you train her to go into a crate at night, when you leave the house and what have you, make sure she has plenty of clean water, a toy or two and the chew bones in there with her. If this doesn’t work, I would try a dog obedience class, usually held at the "Petco" and "Petsmart" chain stores several times a year, as well as several privaate trainers that you can probably find in the phone book, or through your vet.

I wish you good luck, and happy training.

you can go to your local pet store and purchase something called bitter apple spray. this stuff smells really good but when the dog gets a taste of it they hate it. spray everything you can because it is safe on most surfaces.this should do it.

don’t listen to the person that said get her teeth pulled; either get lemon juice or a spray you can buy in a pet store to help stop chewing if she chews on you scream !!!! it really scares them and they see it’s not a good thing and will stop

I heard something from some crazy book, "Dogs for Dummies" or whatever it was..And it said to put what the animal is chewing on, in the middle of the floor, then start yelling at it. Lol. Don’t ask me how it works, and don’t ask me if it really worked, I haven’t tried it yet and I honestly don’t think I want to embarrass myself doing so.

When you catch her chewing on something immediately say "That’s not for Rudy", grab one of her toys and say "This is for Rudy" and immediately start playing with her. Make it fun! Make her love that toy! You may have to spend an entire weekend playing with her and getting her to the point where she loves her toys. Your dog is bored, she needs attention, give it to her with love and you will have a friend for life.

The Bitter Apple Spray works for tables and sofas and stuff also keep chew toys handy and when your dog is chewing something she’s not supposed to pry her teeth off and give her the chew toy.

The bitter apple spray works really well for my dog. Also, if you can’t keep one eye on the dog at all times, you should put it in a crate. Crate training is a God send, use it!
