Cartridge Style Hayward Pool Filters - Understand the Science

Author: Jakob Albertstein

Hayward pool filters come in three basic styles, with those being diatomatious earth, sand and of course cartridge. Cartridge pool filters have been around for decades but in recent years they have been surging in popularity for a number of reasons that may surprise you.

A Basic Concept

The concept of a cartridge filter is quite simple. The swimming pool water enters the system, is directed to the actual filter chamber where it subsequently passes through a plastic filter unit.

The Function of the Filter Unit

First, the larger particles in the water are trapped in the filter unit, which then begins to clog the passageways. As these passageways become tighter by being clogged by these larger particles, they then function to trap the smaller particles that are suspended in the water.

New Advancements in Cartridge Style Hayward Pool Filters

Hayward pool filters are some of the most advanced cartridge type pool filters that are currently available on the market. The development of newer plastics and the refinement of the manufacturing process has led to the emergence of a new family of more durable and effective filters.

Removing Suspended Particles as Small as 10 -15 Microns

Cartridge style Hayward pool filters are have set theĀ  new standard for the entire pool industry. They not only are capable of removing suspended particulate matter as small as ranging between 10 - 15 microns in diameter but they also offer a number of newly developed convenience features that make maintaining your pools filter system a breeze.

Your Pools Unique Water Maintenance Particulars

However; it is imperative to bear in mind that each pool will have its own maintenance particulars that will enter into the final decision making process of determining just what type of pool filter will suit it best. So learn about all three type of Hayward pool filters before rendering your final decision.

How do you change the handle on a top mount Hayward pool filter???
We can not compress the spring enough to get the pin to go into the handle.
    PLEASE HELP

What you need to do is get some longer screws that work with the nuts that come with the valve (they need to have the same thread, and they need to be several inches longer so they can engage the nuts in the bottom of the valve without the spring being compressed. 3 should do it. The longer screws will do the work for you…

The trick is (if you’re not already doing it) to reassemble the top half in the body of the valve, not separately…

Reassemble the top half of the valve in the body of the valve itself using the longer screws (An electric screwdriver works easiest for this). Put the rotor in the body of the valve, then the spring on the rotor shaft (don’t forget the metal washers if they’re there), then the top of the valve so the rotor shaft sticks through it. Use every other screw hole, and tighten each down a little at a time. (So the top stays realtively level as it’s being tightened… don’t tighten down one side too much at one time.) When you get the 3 tightened all the way down, the pin will be able to be tapped in easily (just a matter of lining it up correctly… Also, make sure the open section of the rotor is facing the same way with regards to the pointer on the handle as it was when you took it out.) Once you get the pin in, replace the original screws back in the valve, and you’re all set.

I came up with this method after breaking a few valve tops over the years (I used to try compressing them in a vise… the way I was taught…)

My Hayward pool filter is running at very low pressure and there is some air in the stainer basket. Ideas?
I have backwashed and added new DE, cleaned the strainer gasket and tightened it down. The pump and filter are working but the pressure is less then 5 and there is a good sized pocket of air in the strainer. I have tried alternating between skimmer and floor drain.

You have to remove the top and dig it out or use a wet vac.
Here is a page to show you what it looks like inside and give you replacement sand details.

Look on this site. Find your filter, and look at the instruction manual.

Wish I could see the valve arrangement. That can be the key. If you have Jandy valves then the little o-ring that seals around the valve stem is probably leaking air. Jandy valves are famous for this. Also, lube the pump lid o-ring with either teflon or silicone based lube. Also, check the pump basket for holes or tears. If you find any then the pupm impeller might be clogged up. Typically the pump sounds “gravelly” when this happens.Probably going to be something simple like this.

  9. windancerhil says:

For routine cleaning just leave it on “filter.” If there is a LOT of debris, use “filter to waste” setting. This will drain water out, though. Clean the hair and lint basket on the pump frequently. This can cause the vac hose to “unplug” due to lack of suction. Also, make sure you have closed off any other skimmers (if you have more than one) as well as the main drain (if you have one.)
