Does this sound like a place you’d go to if you are a bride?

Hi everyone! I have a question that I really only think brides can answer, so here goes.

My friend has this idea for a store, and it would be focused very much on clients who are women and who are getting married or know someone who is. The concept is to have a "boutique" where smaller independent consultants can come and sell their products. These would be people like Jafra, Mary Kay, Silpada, etc consultants who want to build their business. Of course, the purpose would be to get a woman or bride into the store so she can pick up all of her favorite things from all of her favorite companies without having to book a party or call several different consultants. (She's still doing the research into whether or not different companies like those I listed above, and others, would have an issue with their consultants setting up in an environment like this or if they'd consider it no different than setting up at a bridal show.)

My friend also wants these consultants to host parties on the weekends so that people who have never heard of the various products can come in and experience them. And, in addition to that she'd like the consultants who carry spa products to actually perform "spa parties" for brides and their wedding parties, or anyone who wants to book the spa experience, but without the sales pitch. The consultant would be limited to telling the people who attend any spa "party" that their products are available at the store at the end of the "party" and that's it. Oh, and she also wants to rent out a big room for things like bridal showers, etc.

In addition she wants me to set up in this store and sell my products, which are almost all wedding based (ie. invitations, accessories, jewelry, etc.). I don't have a problem with it, except I am not sure the idea is one that will take off and be popular. So, that's why I'm asking for opinions or ideas on how to make this idea work.

If you are a bride, would you bring your bridesmaids, mothers, friends, etc to a place like this if it meant you could hang out, have some girl time and do a little shopping at the same time?

Any opinions, suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, it is a good idea. I’ve often thought of it myself and know of similar places.

There are problems I see with it though.

    Is it open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. 7 days a week?
Are all the dealers there all the time, or just once a month?
Are the dealers going to just leave stuff and not talk to the brides etc?
How is “quality” going to be addressed. Is someone going to show old, worn, dirty gowns and call them vintage? or worse?
What about theft? Breakage? Who is responsible?
Who is going to advertise and what is that going to cost YOU above space rental?
Are you going to have a lease? Do you want one? Is a lease good for you?
What happens if the entire project fails?
Who’s responsible for shelving, tables, chairs, atmosphere?
Is it a permanent set up or are displays going in and out leaving half empty tables unattended?

    Think it through.

sounds like a great idea, i would certainly love it, be careful though, you just put your friends idea over the net, hope someone doesn’t steal it on you!!

No, sorry. I am not interested in this concept. I think everyone here locally is sick of the "parties" where-one-buys-something idea.

You write: The consultant would be limited to telling the people who attend any spa "party" that their products are available at the store at the end of the "party"

Sorry, still don't like the idea . . . even with that proviso.

    Hi.

Although the concept is somewhat of a good one, I really don’t think this will fly.

~ Are the consultants all going to be there during the store hours?

~ Can’t an independent consultant (say a Mary Kay consultant) book weekend parties on her own (say for a bachelorette party or a spa party) with the “no pushing products” idea? I guess I don’t see the advantage to the independent beauty consultant to be involved in the boutique when, in fact, she can do this on her own already.

~ As far as your products (invites, accessories), you should just book a “booth” at the various bridal shows in your area. Where I live, all the bridal shows are in early January. The same goes for you (as for the beauty consultants)…..I think YOU would get lots more business getting your name “out there” with a display of your products at a number of bridal shows than you would having your products in a boutique somewhere.
