A Family Vacation In Phoenix, Arizona Offers More Than Cool Pools And Slippery Water Slides

Author: Ann Locicero

One of America's top outdoor destinations and the country's fifth largest city, it is not an accident that Phoenix is home to several of the best destination resorts located in the United States. Explore desert parks and lakes, tour archaeology ruins and historic gold mining towns, or visit one of the many the museums and state-of-the-art sporting facilities.

From Surprise to Apache Junction, the twenty distinct communities that make up the greater Phoenix area offer visitors everything from the slow-paced rural southwest to a bustling college atmosphere. Whether your interest is sports or archaeology, history or hiking, biking, horseback riding, or bird watching Phoenix offers something for everyone not wanting to venture beyond the Valley of the Sun.

Enjoy hiking, biking and horseback riding at the many area parks such as South Mountain, McDowell or Papago. And if quintessential southwest is your goal, explore Hohokam Indian ruins and participate in a simulated excavation at the Deer Valley Rock Art Center or pan for gold and tour a gold mine in Goldfield Ghost Town.

On the chance that it does rain or the kids simply need a break from the great outdoors, take advantage of Valley's cultural side. Children of all ages will enjoy exploring a re-created Zuni Pueblo and participating in hands-on activities at the Heard Museum, discovering science and technology at the Arizona Science Center, or taking in a performance at one of the children's theaters, Childsplay or Valley Youth Theatre.

While you will need to do a fair bit of planning if you intend to take advantage of the many activities unique to Phoenix, there is no need to venture very far. Many child-friendly activities are less than an hour's drive from anywhere in the Valley.

So if you are looking to escape the bitter cold of winter or an overcast rainy spring, plan a trip to Phoenix and once you've pulled your kids away from the numerous activities offered at your destination resort, explore a few of the many fun things to see and do in the Valley of the Sun.

yes, you can. It is okay to swim in a heated pool when it is very cold, not just cool.
It may be cool getting to the pool, but once you are in the water it is fine, getting out of the water and back indoors is not as bad, because you are still warm from the water, and the air doesn’t cool you off as fast, so you can get back inside before you freeze.
I have done this at ski resorts so a little cool air in Florida is not going to bother you.

Can you swim in heated outdoor pools in cool weather?
Hey Guys! My family is planning on going to FL over spingbreak. Of course the weather is not guaranteed to be warm, so I am wondering for hotels or condos that offer “outdoors” heated pools, is it ok to swim in them during the cooler weather days, (50, 60 degrees??)

Are vinyl pools good for the summer-time to cool off? Do they rip easily?
I plan on buying a vinyl pool. I want to know what’s the best company for pools, or whats the best store to buy from. The summers get really hot and I want to know what the best quality is, and to know which one to buy. If you have a vinyl pool, and it has once ripped, how would you fix it?

  6. MANDY says:

Vinyl pools are okay. If you want something that is going to last get an in ground pool. Depending on your area, pick up your phone book and look in the yellow pages.

los angeles hotels with cool pools?
los angeles hotels with cool pools?

I am looking for a hotel in los angeles, CA that has a pool, preferably with like a water slide or something of the sort. If you do not know of one , suggestions for hotels in LA with just cool (large) pools would help too

THANK YOU FOR THE SUGGESTIONS :) any suggestions will help greatly

FYI – we have children so hotels that kids would enjoy are good too

    Thank you so much!

Are above ground pools tacky or are they the “new cool?”?
I have a family of 4. We don’t really want a pool because we’re not swimmers. We’re the kind of people who just like to get in the water and cool off. Would we look like “wannabes” or “tacky” if we went out and got a large above ground pool? It’s much less expensive, easier to maintain and much easier to install. Thanks.

The best, which is in Anaheim, is the Grand Californian at Disneyland Resort. If you don’t want to pay that much, the Howard Johnson right across the street has a waterslide, and is much more reasonably priced.

I have an above ground pool that is 16 feet across, and i can take it apart every fall. I love this pool, because it is the perfect size for a family who, like yours, just likes to go in to cool off. Try google.com and search for a KD (knock down) pool. at http://www.novacompanies.com
    enjoy!
