Hot Tub Start-Up Instructions For Bromine or Chlorine

VOLUME: 3. - FEBRUARY 2009

Spa Start-Up: Brominating Concentrate

First Time Start-Up

  1. Fill your spa with water. If the make-up water is from a well or other  nonmunicipal source, testing prior to filling is recommended.
  2. Super-oxidize the spa with Brominating Concentrate with spa circulation system  turned on. Run all pumps at least one cycle.
  3. Operate the spa circulation system for at least 2 hours.
  4.  Drain, then rinse interior surfaces and refill. Follow draining instructions in  owner's manual. The reason for doing this is because spas are tested with water  and when they are shipped there is some water in the plumbing. By  super-oxidizing with a sanitizer during a pre-fill, you lessen the opportunity to contaminate the water with bacteria.

Refill Guide

  1. Adjust pH (7.2-7.6), total alkalinity (80-120 ppm) and calcium hardness (100-200 ppm).
  2. Apply Brominating Concentrate following label directions. Establish proper bromine residual of 3-6 ppm.

Daily Care

  • If the hot tub is used daily Bromine Concentrate must be added after use, or at the end of the day.
  •  If the hot tub is not used daily - Bromine Concentrate should be added every 3rd day.

Weekly Care

  • Add Teddy Bear Stain and Scale Control.
  • Apply Teddy Bear Water Clarifier.
  • Test the pH. Acceptable range is 7.2-7.6. Ideal range is 7.4-7.6.
  • Test total alkalinity of the water. Proper range is 80-120 ppm.

Monthly Care

  • Test your water - Bring a sample to Teddy Bear Pools & Spas for analysis.
  • Chemically clean your filter with Bear Strip Filter Cleaner.

As Needed

  • Drain, clean, polish and refill based on usage.
  •  If foaming occurs use Teddy Bear Anti-Foam.

liquid chlorine is fine, but it too has a high pH. Trichlor (comes in tablet form) has a low pH and may be helpful to counteract the well water, but has strong fumes. Lithium is more pH neutral, as is Dichlor – but more expensive.

Bromine is a good sanitizer if you desire less fumes (strong odor). It is best used indoors or under a cover since it is quickly degraded by sunlight. It has a higher pH also. Excellent for covered spas.

It is always good to drain and refill the spa if used often.

  2. poolman says:

i own a pool company.run pump 12 to 24 hours non stop.do not get in hot tub while you are doing this.after that retest chlorine and ph level.chlorine level should read on test kit 3.0 and ph should read 7.2 to 7.8 also when hot tub is running have the heat on.this will dissipate the chlorine faster.leave window or door open while doing this.and check chemicals daily do not drain

  3. blahmeister77 says:

Too much chlorine in my hot tub–what can I do?
I tested my hot tub water today, it was bottomed out on chlorine. So I added some, noting that I usually put too little in, and I overdid it. Now it’s all the way on the other end of the test strip, maxed out (and it took the bromine from bottomed out to maxed out as well). What can I do?

  4. Alex says:

Running the aerator will push some of the chlorine out of solution. It works better when the water is hot. If its sunny out, the chlorine will drop faster.

  5. xlp2171 says:

can i use liquid pool chlorine in a hot tub?
I have a 500 gallon hot tub and i use liquid pool chlorine in the hot tub. I am on a well that has high ph to start. the problem i am having is that the ph is always extremly high in the hot tub. any thought? ant better ideas? the only chemicals i use is ph reducer and liquid chlorine.
    Why do people use bromine?

  6. Jovanna says:

How do I balance my chlorine in my hot tub?
My hot tub is in my garage and my room is right next to it. The chlorine smell has taken over my room, and it is irritating my eyes. I did a pH test and the Cl level was at 10. It should be between 3 and 5. What do I do to fix it? Do I have to drain it and refill it?

  7. Kirie says:

While it could have been the chemicals in the hot tub, it also may have been simply from elevating your body temperature. It only takes 10 minutes in a hot tub to do this, and some people do have issues with dizziness, nausea, and other reactions to raising their internal temp. Other factors that might have contributed is if you take certain medications or had any alcohol in your system prior to jumping in. Hope that helps!

  8. Jay Mak says:

It won’t hurt anything except your clothes…but if you want to consume excess Cl, remove your thermal cover for a day and let the sun get in. If you retest it after that and it’s still off the charts, partially drain the tub and refill with fresh water

  9. KittyCat says:

Can someone get high off the chlorine from a hot tub?
Me and my friend got realllly hyper when we were hanging out in her hot tub. We were also eating the chlorine contaminated snow near by, hahah hilarious! Anyway just wondering what it could have been from.

    *HOT TUB EXSPERTS ONLY* jk

  10. Something Smells Fishy says:

How can I neutralize chlorine in a hot tub?
I over-chlorinated a hot tub. Is there anyway I can reduce the active chlorine levels without draining/replacing some of the water? Thnx
