This site has a nice writeup on Chemical Peels, so you can read all about it. Here is an excerpt:
"Having a chemical peel is a bit like sanding down the floorboards – you take off the top layer with all the scuffs and scratches to reveal a smoother surface underneath. So, the type of peel you need will depend on how deep the damage goes."

Microdermabrasion is good too – here is the writeup on it:
    http://www.wahanda.com/treatment/microdermabrasion

"Microdermabrasion is a non-surgical method of resurfacing your skin by scrubbing away the crusty old surface layers and letting the younger, newer skin shine through."

    Hope this helps

The result is superb. Its ideal for problem skins. It remove your dead skin and top skin. Your face will be red and flaky for a week. After that your skin will regenerate new baby skin.
I recommend dermatologist. As beauty spa usually doesn’t do the job well, a surgeon is expensive but not necessary.
If your skin isn’t to over the extreme, I recommend doing microdermabrasion, its similiar but remove the top layer skin slowly and gently. No downtime and gives great result, but you have to come back for regular treatment. You usually see result as soon as first treatment and stop when your happy. With peel you have to do it every few months and are costly.
Ask your dermatologist for more enquiries.
