    Centrifugal Pumps?
where could I find some clear and complete sketches or technical drawings for centrifugal pumps?
and I’d like some sites on design considerations, as in machining ones..
    Thanks!

  2. artsupremo says:

Centrifugal pumps are pumps which uses impellers, while reciprocating pumps uses cylinders.Centrifugal pumps are used usually for liquids which has high viscosity such as water while reciprocating pumps are used for fluids of low viscosity such as oil.Reciprocating pumps usually operates at lower speeds 1150 rpm motors compared to 1750 to 3540 rpm for centrifugal pumps. If you want positive displacement with no problems of priming, use reciprocating pumps. Centrifugal pumps could lose prime when there is a leak in the pump casing. Reciprocating pumps are constant flow and head pumps while the centrifugal pumps are variable flow and head pumps. A pump flow and discharge head can be increased by increasing its speed. In reciprocting pumps , the speed has to remain the same. The flow can be increased with a change in cylinder and piston diameter.

What is the difference between self priming & non self priming Centrifugal pumps?
What is the difference between self priming & non self priming Centrifugal pumps?

  4. eyal b says:

centrifugal pumps by their nature does not generate suction (if filled with air). if they have fluid inside then the flow of the fluid generates the suction. self priming is actually taking care that after the pump stops it will still have fluid inside and it will not drain from it.

  5. oil field trash says:

You could do that but you would have to rely on the bearings of the driver to help support the load. You would also have to be sure one of the two bearings could take an axial thrust load.

As you may know there are vertical inline pumps that do just that.

  6. qwerty695 says:

What are reciprocating & centrifugal pumps and for what purpose are they used in oil refineries ?
And why are they required to operate at constant speed ?

  7. oil field trash says:

Most pumps used in refineries are centrifugal. For applications that require high pressure but low flow rates, reciprocating pumps (typically plunger tye) are used.

They are not required to operate at a constant speed many run with variable speed drives. The main limit has to do with minimum speed for proper operation or they have to avoid specific speeds that can be near the critical speed of the shaft and impeller(s).

  8. deepak_8584 says:

What is the diffrence between centrifugal & resiprocative pumps?
On what basis we decide that whether we need centrifugal or reciprocative pump?

  9. tobak says:

why the centrifugal pumps have two bearings?
I refer to the overhung impeller pump. They normally have two bearings supporting the shaft, (and an oil box between the bearings). Why is that? why not only one bearing? what would happen if they are manufactured with one bearing only?
