    Is it possible for a centrifugal pump to suddenly fail in delivering when in operation due to gland problem?
    The centrifugal pump installed in my factory which sucks water from the tank below suddenly fails to deliver the solution .this happens when the pump is operational.Is it due to air ingress from the stuffing box?we have a conventional type asbestos gland packing .To rule out the usual possibilities i have checked the sucktion pipe and flanges for any leakage.

    Centrifugal pumps are prone to problems with entrapped air preventing the flow out of the impeller. I’m not sure if ingress from the stuffing box could provide sufficient leakage to cause this, though you don’t say about the capacity/size of the pump or the mean time between failures.

    Usually centrifugal pumps have to remain charged to ensure that they work, as they are not brilliant lifting fluids up if there is a lot of air around the impeller, is the discharge leaking, is there a NRV which isn’t functioning in the line somewhere. Worth rining the manufacturer and asking. Sorry can’t be more help.

    There are two concerns. One is the increased pressure drop in the suction line due to the elbows. This will reduce the net positive suction head available to the pump. That may or may not be a problem

    The other is the physical orientation of the elbows. They could form a vapor trap if their orientation is wrong.

    What will happen if the discharge of a centrifugal pump is fully closed?
    Comparing to a positive displacement pump, when the discharge side is fully closed it will cause pressure built up if there is flow pumping by the pump.
    Will it cause any damages to the centrifugal pump if the situation continues? (pump is still on, there is liquid inside)

    You won’t get the pressure spike you would get from deadheading a positive displacement pump, but the fluid in a deadheaded centrifugal pump will heat significantly; all that shaft work goes into heating the fluid. How fast the heating becomes a problem depends on the fluid.
    You could get viscosity changes from heating.
    Also, some centrifugal pumps can go into ‘surge’ with too little flow.

    A centrifugal pump works by the conversion of the rotational kinetic energy, typically from an electric motor or turbine, to an increased static fluid pressure. This action is described by Bernoulli’s principle. The rotation of the pump impeller imparts kinetic energy to the fluid as it is drawn in from the impeller eye (centre) and is forced outward through the impeller vanes to the periphery. As the fluid exits the impeller, the fluid kinetic energy (velocity) is then converted to (static) pressure due to the change in area the fluid experiences in the volute section. Typically the volute shape of the pump casing (increasing in volume), or the diffuser vanes (which serve to slow the fluid, converting to kinetic energy in to flow work) are responsible for the energy conversion. The energy conversion results in an increased pressure on the downstream side of the pump, causing flow.

    It is a practice to minimise elbows(bends) in pump suction line. Due to some unavoidable site conditions, I have to introduce two elbows in a pump suction line. What will be the effect of the elbows in the performance of a centrifugal pump?
