I work front desk at a Spa where we require credit card info from every client who wishes to book an appointment. The reason is because our massage therapists are paid based on commission from individual services rather than hourly, and we need the customers credit card info to reserve the time.
The situation was a woman called for a sameday appt and when I asked for a credit card to book the appt with, she stated that she was driving at the moment and would call me back in 30 minutes with the info. I was extremely busy at the moment and failed to jot a note for myself to take the appt out if the woman didnt call back with the info
She didnt call back at all and I completely forgot about the issue, until she ended up not showing up for her appt. Now my employer is claiming that it is my fault for not getting the required information and that I must cover the service charge to the massage therapist. They are deducting from my next paycheck. This seems illegal and I can't afford it.
Do they have the right to withhold my wages? How can I fight this? I have only been working there 1 month and I can't believe they'd make me actually pay for such a small mistake.
