What You Should Know Before You Buy A Hot Tub Spa

Author: Jim Johnson

Hot tub spas come in all kinds of shapes and sizes, from small ones for just a couple of people at a time, to very large ones that accommodate several people at a time. But no matter which model you choose, any hot tub or spa is designed to help you relax in comfort.

There are actually several common names used for hot tubs and spas today.. In fact, the term hot tub and spa actually mean essentially the same thing to most people. But other commonly used names are whirlpool and jacuzzi. However, Jacuzzi is actually the name of a company that builds spas and whirlpool baths. But for general use, any of those terms mean essentially the same thing, either an in ground or above ground, jetted, heated, water filled tub.

Perhaps the first question to ask if you are considering buying a spa is whether to get one that is in ground or above ground. Of course, the price difference will be considerable, since the in ground units require an awful lot more expensive construction methods. However, their big advantage is that they can add quite a bit of value to your home when it comes time to sell.

The advantage of having a portable spa is that you can take it with you when you move. Essentially self-contained spas require nothing more than an electrical outlet to be able to function on their own. Many people build specialized decks and surroundings for their portable spa, and others just simply carry them inside and outside whenever needed. As you can see, that makes a portable spa very flexible and easy to use.

When you choose a spa, there are a lot of features that are available. You can get contoured seats, built in radios and CD players, and plenty of other luxury choices too. But perhaps the most important feature to pay attention to is the water heater itself. In a portable spa, the heater most often runs on electricity and can range from 1.5 KW up to 11.5 KW, the difference being that the more power the heater has, the faster it can heat up the spa.

In a permanent or in ground spa the heater can be either electric or gas, but most often you'll probably find that it runs on LP gas. Electrical heaters can be cheaper to buy initially, but over the long haul LP gas heaters are much less expensive to run from day-to-day.

Actual average monthly operating costs are hard to nail down though, since much will depend on where you live, how much you use your spa, and at what temperature you had the water set.

Usually its best to buy a hot tub or spa from a company that specializes specifically in selling them, and not as a sideline. And be wary of very cheap deals, as you often get what you pay for in this kind of consumer product.

Hopefully the information above has help you understand more about hot tubs and spas and what options are available for them. If you take your time, remain patient, and use good sense as you shop, you should be able to find a good deal on the spa that will fit you best.

Where can I buy a hot tub time machine?
I wanna get a hot tub time machine for my birthday but i am having trouble finding one. Does anyone know how to get a hold of Doc Brown? Im sure he could give me a lead to a reliable source. Or if anyone knows where to grab one, drop me a line.

As far as support, you will need to be able to hold 125lbs per square foot. That includes up to a 1000lb hot tub, water and people. Most construction should be able to support that, unless there is rot or some other hindrance.

As far as picking the actual tub
    1) Choose a reputable dealer & brand. Look for brands that have 10+ years of sucess.

    2) Be cautious when buying from “Big Box” stores. You may get what looks like a bargain, and actually is a nightmare. Consider how long you expect your “investment” to last. Many times spa sold in big box stores offer little to no warranty. Also they are ill-equipped to handle your spa. Should something go wrong, you no local dealer support, only an 800 number. If you are planning on having the spa for up to about 5 years and possibly paying a spa dealer to service it, go ahead and save money by buying at a big box store. If you expect at least 5 years virtually worry free and a total life of 15-20 years, buy a reputable brand from a spa store.

3)Wet Test! Don’t buy it until you try it. You wouldn’t buy a car without a test drive, and in all reality a good spa will last longer than your car.

    4) Price-wise: if it sounds too good to be true, it is. I’ve seen people on here saying a 5-6 person spa costs around $3300, that makes me suspicious right off the bat. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!

can u buy a hot tub stereo and install it yourself?
we just got a hot tub and we want to get a stereo we were wondering if u can install one yourself? and does anybody know where i can get one???

Well my friend, you should start by purchasing the tub from a reliable source such as craigs list or as previously mentioned, ebay. After purchasing the hot tub, you are going to have to get some Chernobly energy drink. After u get all that, spill the Chernobly by the electrical system and it should create a black hole or vortex that would make u travel back in time. Unfortunately, the problem will be getting back to the future from the past. Depending on how far back you go, they might not have Chernobly around making it impossible to get back. Good luck!

The stereo itself is easy to install, but it’s the speakers that are going to give you a problem. A hot tub stereo is basically just a car stereo that gets mounted into the side of the hot tub instead of the dashboard.

You probably have 220VAC run to the heater and jets. Just take a line of the 220 and run it to a cheap AC/DC supply (because remember, the car stereo runs off of DC power), and then to the stereo.

Now the difficult part. All you have to do is run speaker wires to the speakers and you’re done right? The problem is where are you going to mount the speakers? In most new hot tubs, the speaker mount is molded right into the plastic. If you do find a place to mount the speakers, make sure you add a drain hole next to each one, if they are recessed in an area where water can collect.

I want to buy a hot tub (4 adults). What should I look for and what do I need to do to reinforce my deck?
I would like to find a hot tub that fits 4 adults comfortably with a few kids thrown in every now and then. I live in the northeast and expect to use it all year long. It will be placed on an existing deck that has 2X6 planks on 2X10 joists. The joists run every 16 inches.
