Burning smell coming from cieling. help!!!?

ok, i'm not about to call 911 at 4:30 am, atleast not until i KNOW for sure that somthing is very wrong. so if you could help me with this, it'd be great. Here's my problem:

There's a hallway in our house that has been described by my grandparents as "burning rubber". I'm not sure if it's rubber but it definately smells like somthing is burning that isn't supossed to be.

They seem to think that it has somthing to do with the spa heater being on for 3 or 4 hours too long. The spa was 103 F when they turned it off. I pretty much de-bunked that idea, but maybe i was wrong in doing that. There's a good amount of water all around the spa heater/pump thing. Normally i'd see that as fine because i know spa heaters do spit out water, but tonight when i'm smelling burning in our hallway i'm not so sure.

The heater to our house isn't on. I don't know what could be causing it.

Could be that the spa is wired up with the wrong gauge of wire and when you have it on, it is burning up the wiring at a connection in the attic. Or it could just be plain bad wiring. Either way, you should turn off that breaker and take a look above that ceiling if possible, or call a professional to check it out. If you can’t visually check out the area, feel the ceiling for hot spots. Chances are that once you stop drawing power through the affected wire, the smell will dissipate, but you need to get it checked out ASAP, as the overheating could cause a fire.

If you’re still alive, I would get out. Why would you write to ask? You should call the fire department.

if its in the ceiling first thing i would think is electrical

does the smell have a kind of fishy odour to it?
    if it is its electrical
either way i would be swutching power off at source and calling in a professional
unless you know a lot, leave it to them
ok it will cost you but better to be safe than sorry here

    good luck

I would say if your wiring for the spa runs in that ceiling, then you’ve got an electrical problem. The wiring for a spa should be a very heavy gauge to handle the large amperage flow through it. (#8 or even #6 gauge wire) It will over heat due to resistance if the gauge is wrong. If this is the case, then you have a very serious condition that could cause a fire.
