all expense paid company trip – how do i say thanks??

i'm about to take an all expense paid company trip -- food, spa treatments, and resort room are being covered by my boss. my boss is a really nice guy --- i've worked several places where something like this would be more like a joke around the water cooler (haha... mr. XXX do something nice for us? haha). so how do i go about thanking him? or do i even mention it?? what is common curtosey w/o being unprofessional?

    Hmm.. you do not want to look like you’re "kissing butt" or that there is a little "sumthin sumthin" going on there. In my own opinion, you should maybe just leave a card in his mail box or on his desk, a very professional one-nothing mushy or cutsie. Just let him know what a great time you had but most importantly, what you learned. (Im assuming it was also for a convention?) Then I would suggest maybe bringing in a special treat for everyone-donuts or whatever works for your group- and let them in on the trip. It could be a little 30min meeting where you present what you did. (again thats based on if you went to some sort of meeting)

    – immediately after your return from that trip
    - in person
    - honestly
    - and you may bring him/her a small token from that place.

    Upon on your return to work thank him in person and tell him what a enjoyable time you had. Then follow that up with a formal thank you note, mail it do not just lay it on his desk.

    One word of caution make sure you have earned the trip and he will NOT expect you to lay anything else on his desk upon your return.

    The last warning was because you did not state if you were going alone or if others were going.

    make your response relative to the gesture. What would you do for the kind of $ that is being spent on you, realistically? I don’t mean send him on a trip or make yourself sexually available to him, unless one of those is a reasonable reponse from your point of view relative to the gesture.

    It is likely that the gesture he has offered is a response in thanks for the great work you have done for him, and so begins the metaphorical tennis game. He has hit a curve ball at you. have fun catching it! when your done, have even more fun thinking up a great way to send the ball back in a way he can’t miss (but is still within the parameters of the game, being a professional work relationship – unless its not).

    Some of the things you can do is to consider his needs outside of work and satisfy one of them. This is the reason I mentioned sex, but it doesn’t have to be. He may be happily, monogomously married. So find another need. what does he do recreationally? Who does he idolise? Does he have a mentor?

    Are you going to a place on your work trip that is world famous for something he is passionate about? Sports, cheap multimedia equipment or dvds, alcohol, coffee, etc, just to name a few.

    Get into his head before you go, and make sure he doesn’t know your doing it so you keep the element of surprise. When you get back and present him with the 1 thing in the world he loves the most (after family and money), and you see the look on his face that exclaims "Thank you!" you’ll know how he felt when he told you he was sending you on this trip.

    And don’t stress about it. remember, it’s only a game!!!!!!
